FORMER Neighbours and Blue Heelers star Cathy (Catherine) Godbold has passed away following a brave battle with cancer.

Ms Godbold, the daughter of respected TV presenter and charity worker Rosemary Margan, was best known for her roles as Meg Bowman on Home and Away and as Deborah Hale on The Saddle Club.

She also appeared in Newlyweds, Hey Dad, the TV miniseries Blonde and Frontline.

Memorably she portrayed her mother in The King, the telemovie based on the life of TV great Graham Kennedy.

Her death, aged 43, comes just five months after Ms Margan lost her long battle with cancer.

Ms Godbold was first diagnosed with brain cancer in 2007 following a period of frustrating and perplexing ill-health.

She underwent surgery and rigorous treatment, beating the insidious disease.

However in January this year, while in hospital for treatment on a broken foot, she discovered the cancer had returned and was particularly aggressive.

“The cancer reappeared in the same place and it was impossible to treat it and certainly impossible to operate,” her stepfather Ross Mitchell said.

“It progressed at a very, very quick rate, much quicker than anybody expected.”

Mr Mitchell described Ms Godbold as a funny, warm, kind and wonderful person who only wanted to do good for others and never gave up her battle against the disease.

“She was fun loving, she had a sense of humour that was a bit devilish and she was very kind,” he said.

“One of the things she told her mother a couple of years ago was that she would try and do something nice for someone everyday, whether it was helping someone across the street or something.

“She was very, very close to her mother, they spoke every day, and very close to me. She was very special.”

Ms Godbold passed away peacefully in a Melbourne hospital on Friday.

She will be laid to rest at Springvale Cemetery on Thursday.
