Bronze statue of Carlton great Brendan Fevola returns to its original Flinders Street home

Months after Jacinta Allan famously moved a bronze statue of Carlton great Brendan Fevola to Narre Warren, footy fans have returned the shrine to its rightful home.

A tug of love has emerged over the ‘brass Fev’, a statue of Brendan Fevola, with the life-size tribute to the colourful Carlton player seen strapped to the back of a ute and being carted along the Monash Freeway.

Just like the real Fevola, the statue is a headline magnet and in high demand.

After being bolted to the concourse at Narre Warren railway station at the behest of Premier Jacinta Allan last month, the statue has now been reclaimed by its “guardians” at the Clocks bar/cafe at Flinders Street Station and returned to its fans.

The Clocks team tied the statue to the back of a ute and motored it along the M1 and through the inner city streets of the CBD to Flinders Street Station on Thursday, bringing it home to the commuting hub where selfie-seeking footy fans can worship it.

The ‘brass Fev’ has accrued a lot of road miles in a very short amount of time.

The statue first emerged in Webb Street, Narre Warren on March 1 as part of a Fox FM promotion for the Fifi, Fev and Nick (Fifi Box, Brendan Fevola and Nick Cody) breakfast show. The statue’s tenure in Webb Street was brief.

“The arrangement was that Fox FM could commission a statue to be installed in Webb Street temporarily for a few weeks, with the statue taken down on Friday, April 5,” a Casey council spokesperson explained after the statue was removed.

Homeless, the ‘brass Fev’ spent several weeks propped up in a corridor at Fox FM’s South Melbourne headquarters.

In late April it was rescued by Clocks bar/club and the impressive life sized bust of Fevola in his footy gear took up residence at the door of the venue, directly across the road from Federation Square.

The statue was so popular with footy fans, who would queue to have a late night snap with it, that it required its own security.

The next weird twist in the strange story of the Fevola statue came in late July when Premier Allan intervened and had the statue relocated to the new Narre Warren Station as a recognition of a local hero — Fevola grew up in the suburb.

“I am here at Narre Warren Station. Check out who I have bumped into. It is Fev,” Allan said in a video message in early August.

“We have brought him back home. It is good to see you in Narre Warren, Fev.”

Now, a month later, the ‘brass Fev’ has returned to its “spiritual” home at Flinders Street Station.

An insider said the statue was originally supposed to stay at Narre Warren Station for just three weeks, but the Premier’s office asked for his stay to be extended by a couple of weeks.

The Clocks team is the custodian of the statue and its return is opportune given it is the AFL finals season and Carlton has scraped into the top eight.

Adding to the Blues influence in the city, former Carlton great Anthony Koutoufides is running to be Lord Mayor of Melbourne.
