Australian bodybuilder Calum Von Moger, a three times winner of the Mr Universe title, has opened up about his horror meltdown that saw him jump out of a two storey window in Geelong.

Von Moger, 34, has revealed the depressed and addled state he was in before his dreaded leap in May 2022, in which he suffered a broken back, in his podcast The Lift Lab.

“I don’t remember a heck of a lot and I was not sober,” he told the podcast.

“I had been smoking some weed and I had been drinking and I had been self-medicating a little bit. I wasn’t very coherent. I was just in a different dimension.

“I was planning on just going for a drive and just go out to the bush for a detox, decompress, disconnect and switch off.

“I was going around the house and packing up a lot of stuff, it was chaotic, there was shit everywhere. I was high. I think I was really paranoid of something happening. I probably had voices going on, (and was in a) drug induced psychosis.”

Von Moger, whose sister Anna is married to former AFL star Tom Boyd, said he had struggled with his mental health in the lead up to the Geelong incident.

“I knew I was not doing well mentally and I knew I was being excessive with drugs and whatnot,” he said.

“I ended up waking up in hospital, out of a coma, and found out that I had jumped through a second storey window.

“For me that was like ‘crap, I am not well.’

“I could not move. I had to learn how to walk again because I had a broken back. I had rods and two titanium plates holding my spine together.

“What happened to me, me hurting myself that severely, wasn’t intentional. I was not trying to hurt myself, but, you know, don’t do drugs.”

Von Moger entered rehab in Noosa to get himself back on track.

He suffered another blow with the tragic death of his youngest brother Edward in March 2023.

Von Moger has slowly rebuilt his life and was in Melbourne for the Australian Fitness Expo in April.

His message is simple: “Avoid bad people, avoid drugs, avoid alcohol, all those things. “Avoiding those things, you are going to be better off.”
