Hollywood star Liam Neeson says “it’s great to be back” as he continues filming in Melbourne on his new movie, Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky.

The adrenaline-packed feature has moved from rustic Gippsland town Walhalla to the Docklands Studios in Melbourne.

Neeson joined other cast members including Fan Bingbing, Bernard Curry and Grace O’Sullivan for a look at the state of the art virtual production set.

“It’s great to be back,’’ Neeson said.

“(I’ve been out) a little bit, not as much as I would like. There’s lots of nice restaurants.

“It’s a thriller, there’s lot of elements to it, lots going on and strange things happen.”

“Taken” star Neeson said the cast were great as they showed off the new technology.

The old mining town of Walhalla was transformed into a vibrant Nepalese village decked out in Nepalese writing and flags, with buildings, buses, a pergola and other monuments customised for the set.

Images and video have been transported to the Docklands set.

“Usually there would be a green screen and backgrounds get put in post production,’’ Curry said.

“But this is already shot in camera and as actors it’s great because you do feel you’re in that environment.”

O’Sullivan had nothing but praise for Irish actor Neeson, who was last in Melbourne to film Blacklight in November 2020.

Chinese star Bingbing said she was impressed by the food in Melbourne.

“I really like it here,’’ she said.

All the cast met with Caroline Pitcher, the VicScreen CEO, with the production injecting over $30m into the state and creating nearly 600 jobs.

Ice Road 2: Road to the Sky follows Neeson’s character, Mike McCann, on a dramatic adventure through Nepal’s perilous mountain tops.
