Love Island - Meet the Contestants

IT hasn’t even started but Love Island is already causing controversy.

Online comments about the first line-up of hopefuls for the reality show have criticised the lack of diversity among the cast.

Nine will on Sunday send 10 beautiful men and women into a Spanish villa on the island of Majorca where they will spend up to six weeks in a Big Brother style reality show.

“Image: 10 white, thin, fair haired people standing in their swimwear,” wrote Carly Findlay on Instagram of the cast PR shot.

“Australia is rich with diversity. Did you even make diverse people feel welcome to apply? This is why most diverse people never see ourselves on TV.”

On Twitter, Tom Dibble wrote: “They’re hot, they’re single, they’re white.”

Lucy Thackray joked of the cast shot saying “they’re more orange than white”, while Vanessa Smith wrote: “You mean different coloured swimmers isn’t diversity?”.

But it’s not too late. Unlike other shows like Bachelor and Survivor where casting is wrapped well in advance of the broadcast, a Nine spokesman confirmed producers are still looking for contestants to enter as intruders or what they’re billing as ‘bombs’.

“We cast a wide net to find contestants and with applications open throughout the series for new Islanders, we encourage all Australians from any background to apply for Love Island Australia,” the spokesman said, pointing contenders to the Love Island casting website.

The first look cast of 10 that will be in the premiere episode on Sunday night includes Rugby Sevens footballer Charlie Taylor. Others in the cast include model Justin Lacko, nursing student Erin Barnett and actor and bartender Cassidy McGill.
