Time On: Rebecca Maddern set for new footy role, Ross Lyon hits back at Hutchy

Ross Lyon and Craig Hutchison have traded potshots as the tension between the Nine stablemates heats up.

Channel 7 presenter Jacqui Felgate to leave newsroom

Time On is your Monday wrap up of all the footy gossip from the weekend.

Lyon and Hutchy’s war of words heats up

The tension between Nine stablemates Ross Lyon and Craig Hutchison is heating up.

On his podcast, The Sounding Board, Hutchy brought up a “fascinating confession” made by Lyon on Triple M that he didn’t want to go through the process to get the top job at Carlton against assistant coaches, but was happy to go up against other senior coaches.

Hutchy, who hosts Footy Classified on Monday nights, didn’t hold back, saying Lyon had scored “an own goal and a half”.

“He’s pulled the wrong rein there, that’s an error of judgment on his behalf in September.

“Look at this team now, (3-0), they look one of the best teams in the competition, the talent was already built. They were a relatively coachable next step.

“They were easily his best shot at a premiership he covets and I think he would have won that job head to head with (Michael) Voss in an interview process … you can’t decide who you get interviewed against.”

Lyon hit back when asked to respond on his Wednesday night Footy Classified, insisting he’s not wistful and enjoying his media roles: “It’s a little bit mischievous because Craig understands … there wasn’t really a process in train. And I’ll just leave it at that.

“If they’re enjoying that, that’s OK, that just sums up the podcast.”

And then on Sunday Lyon doubled down when the topic was brought up again on Triple M, taking aim at SEN’s poor ratings under Hutchy’s leadership.

“I thought he’d have his hands full righting the ship in the ratings but if I help with their ratings good luck to them,’’ he said. Ouch!

Maddern in box seat for footy shuffle

Jacqui Felgate’s shock departure from Channel 7 on Sunday night raised plenty of chatter.

Who will replace her in the plum gig as sports presenter, news presenter, doing footy updates and hosting the Brownlow?

While she is in talks with the network to continue having a presence in some form, the word is Rebecca Maddern could be set for a footy role.

Maddern joined the network from Nine in January, and has been co-presenting the news on weekends alongside Mike Amor.

She was absent on Sunday night having lost her voice before the weekend.

Tokyo Olympics host Abbey Gelmi is also in the running for the sports gig.

With a sports background and a deep love of footy, Maddern could well fill the void.

Abbey Gelmi who was also a key host of the Tokyo Olympics and Beijing Winter Olympics may also be in the frame.

Reporter Andrew McCormack has also stepped in to present when Felgate has been absent.

Tom’s cricket joy

Former Fox Footy reporter Tom Morris has had a reason to smile after winning his cricket grand final on Saturday.

His team, St Kilda’s Second XI, won the District Cricket grand final, with Morris part of the team photo with the premiers flag at Junction Oval.

A remorseful Morris was sacked last month over sexist remarks he made about a female colleague and a separate offensive video that was widely circulated on social media.

Brown’s Botox battle

They say he who protests too much might actually be guilty of something – could that curiously be the case for Nathan Brown and the accusation that he’s had Botox applied to his forehead.

The issue came to light on Triple M’s Friday Huddle when the former footy star’s radio colleagues were convinced he couldn’t move his forehead and there was a “smoothing of the region”.

They even called the expert Wayne Carey for his take which was a definitive yes. But Brown is consistently denying he’s had the “Bobo”, even having to defend himself on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show and then again on Triple M’s Sunday Rub.

“I have not, this is ridiculous,’’ Brown said.

“My old man sitting in Bendigo, he’d be horrified because he knows we have got good skin in our family … we’re just genetically blessed. I have not had it.”

Cornes v Ginnivan

Who knew we’d still be talking about Kane Cornes and Jack Ginnivan after Round 3?

The Port Adelaide great previously criticised the Pies’ agitator for over celebrating with GoPro footage after Collingwood’s Round 1 win over St Kilda. And he was quick to have a dig after the game on Saturday night. “So @CollingwoodFC, who gets the GoPro? #AFLPiesCats” Cornes tweeted.

Cornes didn’t stop there though, saying on the Sunday Footy Show that Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury should be having a word to the young eighth gamer for his antics.

Pendlebury was heard saying to the umpire after a 50m penalty was paid to Patrick Dangerfield: “Is there a fine for staging?”

Cornes put up footage of Ginnivan appearing to throw his head back for a free kick in the loss to Geelong.

“(Scott) needs to talk to some of his players about staging, this one from the young player in Ginnivan — he needs to get this out of his game,’’ Cornes said.

“You can’t be doing that, if you’re going to be the agitator, if you’re going to be aggressive, if you’re going to get in the face of the opposition, you’re not going to be staging for free kicks.

“So, Scott, you’ve might have one with Dangerfield, but he’s got one with his own player, as well.

“If you’re going to have a crack at the other players, pull him (Ginnivan) aside and say: ‘You want to get that out of your game if you’re going to be the agitator and get under the skin, you’ve got to put your head over it’.”

Ginnivan, who shocked with a new blonde look, doesn’t seem fazed. He’s won plenty of support from coach Craig McRae to commentator Brian Taylor and Saints champion Nick Riewoldt.

Pert’s U-turn

Melbourne CEO Gary Pert was driving into the MCG on Friday, ready for a big weekend of footy, when he got the call from his wife that she had caught Covid.

He had to turn back and isolate, missing both Friday night’s game against Essendon and Saturday’s historic AFLW prelim when Melbourne won through to the Grand Final.

At least he’ll be OK to witness another potential Dees flag this Saturday.
