Time On: Matthew Lloyd’s on-air ribbing on Sunday Footy Show host Tony Jones goes too far

It’s usually fun and games on the Sunday Footy Show, but host Tony Jones wasn’t impressed when an on-air roast about him went too far.

Time On is your Monday wrap-up of all the footy gossip and banter from the weekend.

There’s always plenty of ribbing and fun on the Sunday Footy Show but host Tony Jones wasn’t feeling as jovial after the taunting this time.

The What Caught My Eye segment on Sunday took a slight turn despite the heavy laughter among the panel at Jones’ expense. First came Kane Cornes’ ‘chompilation’ of all the guests who have signed off interviews referring to Jones as ‘chompers’.

Then came more humour aimed at Jones, when Matthew Lloyd pointed out that he doesn’t always look happy when he’s out on the job.

“Flat as a tack, what’s going on,’’ Lloyd said as pictures were shown of Jones looking glum.

“I have a lot of people saying to me, what’s he like, is he happy with anything?

“Weekend at Bernie’s, it’s like Weekend at TJ’s... you’re here but you’re not.”

Lloyd then concluded by labelling Jones “a miserable human” and a “meat sack”.

“You’ve got a great life and you’re just flat as a tack,’’ Lloyd said.

He said meat sack is a term he uses while playing cricket to sledge the opposition.

The panel were shedding tears through laughter but Jones wasn’t impressed.

“I’ve been insulted by the best of them but never before have I been referred to as a miserable human and a meat sack,’’ Jones said.

Lloyd admitted: “Sorry, I probably took it a bit far. When I’m bowling in cricket and someone’s not fielding well that’s what I call them. Sorry TJ.”

Jones said it was quite harsh but he wasn’t too bruised in the end, saying it was all a bit of theatre.

The last time he was that hurt he threatened to and then proceeded to walk off set when vision of his infamous Rebecca Judd kiss gone wrong was aired.

Carey remorseful after podcast sledge

Wayne Carey says he can speak freely now and some of his views on footy and related issues have been interesting listening so far.

But the former commentator got a bit too personal last week on his podcast, The Truth Hurts, when he had Dylan Buckley and Daniel Gorringe in his sights after hearing they brought him up on one of their podcast episodes.

After delivering a few nasty clips he backtracked with a hint of remorse.

“That was a little bit tongue in cheek, I might have been a bit harsh,’’ he said.

Why Brayshaw turned down $20K

Footy has got in the way of all-rounder commentator James Brayshaw taking up a plum gig.

Brayshaw, who just returned from London hosting Seven’s cricket coverage of the World Test Championship, was sounded out to host the official Bledisloe Cup function at the MCG on July 29 between the Wallabies and New Zealand.

But his commitments commentating with Triple M meant he couldn’t accept the lucrative offer.

“They didn’t want Hamish McLachlan, they didn’t want Bruce McAvaney, they didn’t want Matty Johns, they wanted one man,’’ Damian Barrett said on Triple M’s Saturday Rub.

“And offered him I’ve been told, $20,000, thinking this would get it over the line.

“Normally Jim would take this in a heartbeat because he’s got to pay for a wedding... (but he) can’t say yes, he’s got a game in his favourite city of Australia — Geelong.”

A slightly salty Brayshaw said: “Even before I knew this gig was up I did everything I could not to do that game in Geelong.”

Is this Hawkins next gig?

Geelong star forward Tom Hawkins was a surprise addition to the Fox Footy commentary box on Sunday.

Hawkins was called up to do special comments alongside Jonathan Brown and commentator Mark Howard for the Bulldogs v North Melbourne match, with Dermott Brereton providing insight from the stands and Sarah Jones covering the boundary.

Hawkins was very impressive, as he has been on AFL360, showing he has a bright future if he ends up pursuing the commentary caper.

Cotchin dedicates win to wife

The plaudits came from everywhere for Trent Cotchin who led the Tigers to a win in his 300th game on Saturday night.

The scenes with family, friends and having a kick on a wet MCG after the game with his son Parker completed a fairytale weekend.

Before the game he spoke to Channel 7’s Hamish McLachlan and paid tribute to his wife Brooke.

“To be honest with you, I’m not sure without her that I’d still be here,’’ he said.

“Going through so many challenging times whether it be from a football or personal point of view, she’s been there through thick and thin.”

It was great to see the likes of Damien Hardwick, Mick Malthouse, Kevin Bartlett and Francis Bourke in the crowd.
