Time On: Jordan Lewis’ career advice to Bulldogs star Bailey Smith

Jordan Lewis has warned Bulldogs star Bailey Smith the time has come for him to assess his off-field lifestyle as speculation on his playing future continues to swirl.

Time On is your daily wrap-up of all the footy gossip and banter.

Jordan Lewis delivered a blunt assessment of Bulldogs star Bailey Smith’s 2023 form on Fox Footy’s AFL360.

The four-time Hawthorn premiership star said Smith needed to “assess all parts of his life” as speculation on his future continues.

“I think there comes a time in players’ careers and star players go through it probably more outside the club than any other player,” he said in conversation with Gerard Whateley.

“There comes a time in a player’s career when they need to assess all parts of their life.

“It‘s tough for Bailey Smith to do that because his stuff off the field is so lucrative.

“So what do you want to be remembered as?

“Do you want to put your football first or do you want to put your outside life and commitments first?”

Billy’s wedding rejection

Billy Brownless says he offered to be the MC at James Brayshaw’s November wedding — but was rejected.

“Can you believe it, I said I’d MC or be in his bridal party and I got knocked back,’’ Brownless said.

“I would have done it for $1000. I would have even done it for free for old Jim.”

Brayshaw is marrying his love Lisa Christie in Perth.

He and Brownless co-host Triple M’s Rush Hour.

Brownless meanwhile is planning to have a white Christmas this year.

The publican and Geelong great is taking his four children — Lucy, Ruby, Oscar and Max — on a holiday to New York and Mexico.

“Never done that before, we’re excited,’’ Brownless said. “Oscar is away now, he’s going to work in Italy on a vineyard”.

Where did you have the Pies?

Lewis was also reminded of his poor pre-season prediction that top of the table Collingwood wouldn’t make the finals. He was reminded of it by Collingwood coach Craig McRae.

“Where did you pick us for this year, Jordy?” McRae sheepishly asked.

“I said missing the finals for the fact of all those close games, hard to read, then after Round One … I said they’ll make it,’’ Lewis said.

“I thought last year, unbelievable season, but hard to read those close games. But after Round One it was the Collingwood side we saw last year.”

Brian Taylor the … body language coach?

You may have to hear it to believe it, but Brian Taylor was once Matthew Richardson’s body language coach.

Richardson was no stranger to some on-field anger, so coach Terry Wallace brought in the big guns to reign in Richo’s hothead.

“I’d done leadership courses, I’d gone out and hired a psychologist, and I said ‘I’d try anything, Plough’,” Richardson told the Life of Brian podcast.

“He (Wallace) said ‘look, I’ve sourced you a body language coach’.

“I turned around and looked up at the Jack Dyer Stand and Brian was sitting there.”

Carlton stars and celebs go ‘all in’

Diehard Blues fans Dave Hughes and Adam Gilchrist say they’re due for a dose of sweet September success.

Comedian and radio host Hughes is back on the bandwagon as Carlton enters its first finals series in a decade.

“I’m absolutely a believer,’’ Hughes said.

“I’ve become the most positive person alive. Our toughest game will be when we play Brisbane in Brisbane, I’m going all in.”

Cricket great and Fox Cricket commentator Gilchrist got in the spirit with Carlton stars Sam Docherty and Jess Good.

“Vossy (coach Michael Voss) invited me to hang out with the team when they played the Eagles in Perth and there was a good camaraderie and feeling,’’ he said. “Sam gave my little boy a pair of his boots so he won a fan for life.”

Gilchrist and Hughes are gearing up for a big month of action with Fox Footy’s finals coverage, the AFLW competition starting this weekend and then a big summer on Fox Cricket and Kayo Sports.
