Alexandra Merrett, wife of Essendon captain Zach Merrett, was forced to leave the Anzac Day match after struggling to find a breastfeeding room at the MCG.
The influencer and digital marketer had to pump breast milk in a toilet cubicle after about 20 minutes of trying to locate an area to feed their baby son Jude.
She reluctantly used the public toilet area because she didn’t want to miss any more of the match against Collingwood. She ended up leaving early though to go home and continue feeding their three month-old, saying her “boobs wouldn’t have made it through the whole game”.
The parenting room in the MCC Members’ Reserve is kept locked on event day and requires staff assistance.
Merrett posted a video on TikTok showing her in a bathroom cubicle pouring milk into a pouch and placing it inside a cooler bag.
“A petition for the MCG to have a breastfeeding room,” she captioned the clip.
Merrett accompanied it with a comment: “Update: okay apparently there is I just ran around for 20 mins unable to find.”
Her followers were quick to point out there were rooms available on level one.
“They do (have rooms)! There are 4 parent rooms on level 1, which have feeding/breastfeeding cubicles, change tables, microwaves, and TVs to keep watching the game and more,” one user said.
Merrett responded: “This would have been good to know.”
She added: “I walked around for ages and couldn’t find one!”
Another person said: “They have one, AFL members has one not sure where else. I Googled it before I went.”
“There is an absolute beautiful one at m28 on level one, and also one near m55 as well,” a third added.
“Being a mum doesn’t stop! I love this though,” another said.
Merrett said she had copped some hate from people asking why she didn’t ask for assistance.
