Melbourne forward Joel Smith has proposed to his partner Elise Carroll as he awaits the outcome of his positive drugs test.
Smith and Carroll share a daughter Tilly who was born in September.
The happy engagement news was revealed on Friday and welcomed by Smith’s teammates, their partners and friends and family.
Carroll captioned a picture of the pair with the ring on display: “It was always you.” along with a white love heart.
Smith’s teammate Clayton Oliver commented with three love hearts: “Unbelievable!!! Congratulations”.
Charlotte Viney, wife of Smith’s teammate Jack Viney, wrote: “GAHHHH congratulations you two!!”
Smith is currently provisionally suspended after testing positive to cocaine in a sample taken after the Demons win over Hawthorn in round 23.
He was handed the suspension on October 10.
He is reportedly trying to get access to an anti-doping provision that could have him serve only a one-month ban.
Oliver, who has hit the headlines this season due to his off-field behaviour, was at Smith’s house when he suffered a seizure and was hospitalised in October.
The club said he is “in a great headspace” after his troubled year.
Melbourne great Garry Lyon said Smith’s positive result “ripped (him) in the guts” and said Smith, the son of former Demons high-flyer Shaun Smith, deserved to miss weeks.
“If you’ve tested positive in a games situation, you must be missing games,” Lyon said on SEN.
At the end of October Demons coach Simon Goodwin said he was angry and frustrated and admitted he hadn’t yet spoken to Smith since the positive test.
