Collingwood star Jordan De Goey dedicated his premiership medal to his beloved grandmother Elisabeth and this week is mourning her passing after a long battle with cancer.
De Goey shared the sad news on Instagram with a joyous picture of the pair together in the rooms after the grand final.
“I’ll cherish this moment forever! RIP Oma” De Goey wrote in the caption with a red love heart.
After Collingwood’s win over Brisbane an emotional De Goey was surrounded by family including his ecstatic grandmother who was in a wheelchair.
“Unfortunately, she has terminal cancer, so this will be the last game for her,” De Goey said. “That means the world to me to have her here.
“My grandfather was super influential in my career and unfortunately he passed away. So for me to be able to see (his grandmother) in the rooms is so special. This is a very special moment for my family.”
De Goey was captured on video placing his premiership medal around his grandmother’s neck after asking her, “Do you want it?”.
He then posed for a photo as a beaming Elisabeth bit the precious medal.
De Goey, who starred in the grand final, has spent time in Bali during the off-season. He has bounced back from his ‘bad boy’ image, signing a five-year extension with Collingwood last year.
He said he couldn’t have done it without the support of his family.
“It is kind of repaying the faith a bit,” he said. “Dad has been with me from the start (in his football journey) and the family rides the waves as much as you do.
“I can’t thank them enough.”
He added: “They (Collingwood) have just created this family culture and I’m really thriving in that, as a lot of the other boys are, too.”
