Scott Cam says MAFS bride used The Block for Instagram moment

She was booted off MAFS then resurfaced on The Block, claiming she’d fallen in love with life as a tradie. But Scott Cam says Hayley Vernon’s career on the tools amounted to nothing more than an Instagram moment.

The Block host Scott Cam says Married At First Sight “bride” Hayley Vernon used his show to shoot an Instagram moment as a tradie, then left the work site never to return.

Vernon, who was booted off MAFS with “groom” David Cameron for their toxic behaviour, was photographed at The Block’s 2020 building site in Brighton, wearing hi-vis and emptying bins into a skip.

She also shared the moment on her socials, posting: “Have I told you the story of the girl that fell in love with being a trady (sic) and is considering getting in the tools full time?”

But Cam said Vernon’s shift lasted all of 90 minutes.

“She was there for a few hours, and once she got her photos taken by the paparazzi, she left,” Cam said.

“I don’t know what the purpose of that visit was, to be honest. Not that I avoided her, but I was busy doing my thing, and she was busy for an hour and half doing her thing.”

Did the blunt talking Cam warn Vernon against MAFS-style shenanigans on his show?

“I didn’t have a word to her,” Cam replied, laughing.

“She was there to get a few paparazzi shots.”

With The Block’s new season premiering on Nine on Sunday, Cam revealed he is recovering from emergency surgery on his neck.

“It’s a bit of wear and tear on the neck after 40 years of work on the tools. The vertebrae on my neck squashed down and blew out the disc and it was crushing my nerves. I was in dire straits,” Cam said.

“I had to go in for an emergency three hour operation on my neck. They cut a channel in my vertebrae.”

Pain, tears, ambulance?

“Ambulance, pain, no tears,” Cam answered.

“I’m being cautious now. I’m not allowed to lift more than a kilo for six weeks which is killing me. It’s driving me insane.”

COVID-19 shut down The Block five weeks into filming.

But teams reconvened after producers implemented measures including a medical clinic, full time nurse, temperature checks, flu vaccinations, social distancing in rooms with tradies, and visitor restrictions.

Cam said the production missed Victoria’s Stage 4 lockdowns by two weeks.

“It was really tough for (the contestants), mentally. The Block is a hard game to be in, let alone with a pandemic behind you,” Cam said.

He added: “We wanted to make a happy Block this year, because last year was tough. (Last season) was hard work, it was too big. This season ended up being a feel-good, with ups and downs and tears and tantrums. But it’s sit-down family fun.”
