NEVER LET it be said Russell Crowe doesn’t throw his weight behind a good film.
The Oscar winner has been snapped on the Victorian set of True Story of the Kelly Gang sporting a wild Crowe’s nest of a bushranger beard and amply filling the smart old timey duds of the granddaddy of Australian outlaws.
Justin Kurzel’s film, based on Peter Carey’s Booker Prize-winning novel, has been filming in the snow at Lake Mountain, outside Marysville.

Crowe is playing Harry Power, an Irish convict transported to Australia in 1842 who, during a daring career as a bushranger, is said to have taken Ned Kelly on as an “apprentice”.
Kelly is played by young English actor George MacKay, while it is likely Charlie Hunnam is playing Sergeant O’Neil, a policeman who was initially friendly to the Kellys.
Spotting Hunnam has become a sport up in the North East, after the Sons of Anarchy star happily posed for photos with locals on an outing to Woolies in Wangaratta.
Crowe pulled the hair over fans’ eyes by showing off his preparation for the Kelly Gang role on Twitter last month. The 54-year-old shared photos of his epic beard and even video of himself crooning while grooming his lofty grey-speckled bristles.
In the last few days, Crowe shared photos of his picturesque Lake Mountain surroundings labelled “My office today” and urged people to revisit the area.
“Last time I was in Marysville was a little while after the devastating fire of 2009. I tell you what, the place is looking great. An incredible testament to the strength and resilience of that community. Go and have a look at how it has bounced back.”
