Kyle Sandilands and Anna Heinrich channel Judge Judy for Channel 10 Pilot Week gamble Trial By Kyle

RADIO kingpin Kyle Sandilands and Anna Heinrich are set to become TVs new odd couple on show Trial By Kyle, ruling on an Instagram star taking on a medical travel agency over a botched boob job or a reality personality accusing a photographer of collusion over paparazzi photos, and so much more.

Channel 10 Pilot Week

TALK about the odd couple. Are there two less likely people to be teamed for a television show than Kyle Sandilands and Anna Heinrich?

But that is exactly what has happened — the radio shock jock and former contestant on The Bachelor Australia are together for Channel 10’s Judge Judy-style Trial By Kyle.

The show, part of Ten’s Pilot Week is a game-changer for both — a chance for Sandilands to resurrect his television career and for Heinrich to show she is much more than a face on a dating show.

Sandilands is a radio king but his television credits are much patchier.

He was sacked from Australian Idol in 2009, had a disastrous stint hosting Big Brother, as well as short-lived appearances on The X-Factor and Australia’s Got Talent.

“Channel 10 had come knocking on the door saying was I interested in coming back and doing some television but I was having such a fun time just doing radio that I was initially ‘no’,” Sandilands says.

“Then they reapproached with this idea and at first I was dumbfounded thinking ‘I am not a judge’. They said ‘it is just like Judge Judy’ and I said ‘yes, but she’s an actual judge’. I couldn’t wrap my head around it.

“I was really apprehensive even on the day of shooting but by the time we broke for lunch I went ‘this is easy’. It is really just listening to two people’s point of view and trying to come to some common ground.”

Heinrich won Tim Robards’ heart on the first season of The Bachelor Australia in 2013. The pair married in Italy in June.

Trial By Kyle is a chance for Heinrich to give the Australian public an insight into her job as a criminal lawyer. Heinrich still works cases but has gone part-time since The Bachelor Australia shot her to fame.

“I haven’t been able to do that (show lawyer skills) before (on a television show),” Heinrich says. “I have always tried to separate my legal career from the entertainment industry.

“There have been a lot of things (television offers) but nothing was the right fit. Combining the two on Trial By Kyle is perfect.

“I think people think I’m a bubbly girl that is constantly laughing and being a bit silly but Trial By Kyle will show a different side of me — a more professional side.

“When I first heard Kyle’s name being thrown in the mix I was a little worried but after my first meeting with him I knew it was going to work.

“It plays off Judge Judy but there is a twist. I’m considered the judge’s associate. I’m basically helping Kyle with any legal issue he has. These are civil disputes so you’ll have plaintiffs who will tell their side of the story and then Kyle will ask me for my advice and what the legal issues around the matter are.

“I’ll give him guidance — where I believe he should head when he is considering his verdict but at the end of the day Kyle will make the final decision. Kyle’s the beauty and I’m the brains on this one.”

The cases being adjudicated by Sandilands are suitably saucy — the perfect fodder given his outspoken reputation.

Lingerie waitress Tiffany Darling accuses a former friend of stealing one of her clients. Instagram sensation Skye Wheatley takes on a medical travel agency after what she claims is a botched boob job.

Married At First Sight groom Nasser Sultan accuses a Sydney photographer of colluding to set-up paparazzo shots. Two female porn stars feud over payment for an adult film.

“I thought it would be raunchy but it is actually very emotional,” Sandilands says.

“There is a lot of arguing and carrying on. I can see straight through the lies. You only have to ask a few questions and people’s lies unravel.

“A lot of people have only seen the Idol stuff — the edited-down nasty judge. They (Idol producers) wanted me to be a bit of a nasty a---hole which is easy for me because I’ve got a bit of that in me but I’ve also got compassion. I’m not here (on Trial by Kyle) to be purposefully nasty. I’m here to do what’s right. It is a different side of me.

“Anna is a sweetheart and super smart. She is the handbrake to my accelerator. She is vital to the show working.”

Ten obviously has high hopes for Trial by Kyle — catchy title, top stars, prime time slot — and Sandilands says the network gave the green light to filming two episodes.

Heinrich is definitely on board if the show rates well and Ten commissions a full series.

“I think it has a lot of potential,” Heinrich says.

“There are a lot of interesting cases and disputes in the pilot but there is so much more that the show can do.”

But what about Sandilands? Can he fit the filming of a full series into his busy schedule? Does he even want to?

“I don’t enjoy it (television) as much (as radio),” Sandilands says.

“Radio is easy — live and free and once it is done there is none of this “oh can we just do that again (second take) because the light wasn’t working.

“The question I’ve asked, if this goes to series, is “how often am I going to be required?” But we shot two episodes in one day. Some of the cases went for five minutes and some went for an hour.

“If people like it and it resonates I’m happy to do it. This is how much of a lunatic I am. By the end of filming I thought ‘I could be a judge for real — it’s not that hard.”
