Maddison Sullivan-Hunter has spoken of her relief after “common sense” prevailed and IVF procedures were reinstated in Victoria.
Sullivan-Hunter, the wife of Bulldogs star Lachie Hunter, went viral on social media when she posted her heartbreak and distress at hearing of the move to delay treatments.
She has undergone her own experience with IVF having gone through five rounds.
“I was thrilled, everyone just breathed a big sigh of relief,’’ she said of the news on Thursday.
“It should have never been a question in the first place. It’s a testament to every single person who followed a link and signed a petition, or gorgeous Melanie who uploaded her video.
“The noise has had an impact which is amazing.
“One cycle has been missed for a bunch of people and that is heartbreaking but let’s get them back now.”
Sullivan-Hunter has detailed her emotional journey in the hope of falling pregnant and says IVF shouldn’t be referred to as “elective”.
She and Hunter, who got married last weekend, are taking some time to pause.
“For us, we haven’t said we’re never going to have kids, we’re just saying it’s been really difficult and it will likely be difficult if we go back, but IVF has given us an amazing opportunity to maintain a hope for having a family in a traditional sense,’’ she said.
“Even people who it hasn’t worked for, people are only ever complimentary of the fact we have that opportunity and that’s why I was so passionate. We’re so lucky to have it but it’s no one’s first choice.
“For someone who has been trying to have a baby for years or has been given heartbreaking cancer news and needs to preserve fertility or low ovarian count, like me, that’s not a choice.”
