Luke Darcy has revealed he thought Eddie McGuire’s exit as the president of Collingwood was “horrific”.
Former Bulldogs champion Darcy worked with McGuire for 11 years on Triple M’s Hot Breafkast show, finishing up last November.
Darcy said McGuire deserved better.
“Obviously the elephant in the room is just what’s happened … you should have a ledger of all the good things you do,’’ Darcy told the Hump Day with Swanny and Friends Podcast with Dane Swan, Samantha Riches and Ralph Horowitz.
“If you go and stand in the Holden Centre and look at … that’s a 200 year contribution that I think one person may be just about solely responsible for. Along with about four million other good things and incredible things.
“I always describe him — he’s your phone-a-friend.
“Pun intended because if you’re in trouble he’ll know the person and he’s prepared to ring and he’ll do it at any time of the night and he’s genuine.
“He’s got a big heart.
“You have a few bruises being around Ed, everyone’s been in an argument with Ed.
“You know what I love about him, he’ll never hold a grudge.
“You move on and business is normal the next day.
“I worked with him every morning for 11 years and he’s got a huge heart and I think the way that ended to me was horrific.”
Darcy said he loved working with McGuire, who stood down last month as Magpies president after almost 23 years, amid controversy over the release of the Do Better report.
But the Channel 7 and Triple M football commentator says he’s done with breakfast radio.
“Eleven years of that breakfast slot and life has changed for the better,’’ Darcy said.
“I was (up at) 4.30 every morning for 11 years.
“The thing I didn’t realise was all the things you didn’t do in the evening because you just became so boring.
“That was my way of coping I just said no to a whole heap of things.
“To keep doing it I just made sure I got enough sleep.
“It was a great job, it was a great experience. Great working with Eddie for 11 years and Mick (Molloy) and Wil (Anderson) and Rosie (Walton) was just a superstar, love the job but just would never ever do it again.
“It would take a lot of cash, and I don’t think there is enough. I think that chapter has well and truly sailed for me.”
He said the Triple M team’s trips to Hawaii, New York, Gallipoli and Super Bowls were shining lights.
“Breakfast radio kills people and kills people’s creativity,’’ Darcy said.
“You put them in a room, you’re fatigued, you can’t go out at night, you have no life, but if you go and do trips like that you end up with those lifelong stories that were brilliant.”
