Lauren Phillips’ ex-husband Lachlan Spark has removed his Instagram account, following the backlash from his brutal assessment of their failed marriage.
Spark said he regrets making his public comments, telling the Herald Sun: “It was incredibly naive and stupid of me to say anything about my experience.
“I deserve all the criticism I’ve copped and I regret the hurt I’ve caused. Back to anonymity for this fool.”
Spark’s followers tripled after the brazen attack, in which he claimed Phillips cared more about Instagram and free holidays than she did for him.
He then followed up by revealing more about the messy 2018 break-up ahead of the sale of their Fitzroy house next month.
Now living in Sydney, Spark spoke glowingly of his new relationship with Courtney Wynbergen, a communications exec at Qantas before COVID-19 hit.
He said on Sunday: “I’ve been very careful to not speak badly about Lauren since we split because despite what we’ve been through, she’s a good person. I foolishly let my emotions and my ego get in the way of my better judgment.”
In his assessment, Spark said he needed a wife and after their lavish 2017 wedding on the Mornington Peninsula, it became clear they were heading in different directions.
Phillips, a successful television host and weather presenter on Weekend Today and soon to be on KIIS FM summer breakfast, has maintained a dignified silence throughout the emotional week.
She has been living in Byron Bay while dating jet tycoon Paul O’Brien, and returned to Melbourne at the weekend.
On Instagram, Spark wrote: “A while ago, I married a girl who cared much more about herself and how she was perceived than she did about me. It was a lot … too much, actually.
“I left and despite losing almost every friend I’d found over seven years (and a few other ‘best mates’ for good measure) in the blink of an eye, it was the best thing I’ve ever done.”
He continued: “I truly believed there was more to a relationship (and life) than skin-deep friends, free holidays and Instagram followers — I just needed to find it.”
