Joe McGuire joins Fox Sports commentary box for NRL showpiece games in Las Vegas

The son of media identity Eddie McGuire is still on a high after winning the NFL college national championships, but it seems he’s also inherited the family’s knack for broadcasting.

College star endorses Vegas takeover

From AFL to NFL and now NRL, Joe McGuire is compiling quite the sporting resume.

The son of top media personality Eddie McGuire started his career playing footy in Melbourne and in January won the college national championships with the Ohio State Buckeyes after heading to the US as an aspiring punter.

On Sunday he was in the commentary box with Fox Sports for the NRL’s showpiece rugby league matches in Las Vegas.

“It’s been fantastic, obviously I expected a few Australians to come over but just walking down the strip it just sounds like every single person is Australian,’’ McGuire, 24, said.

“Hopefully I can draw some good comparisons, a full back is a bit like a running back, a half back makes a lot of plays a bit like a quarter back does, then the forwards, the big guys like Jordan Mailata upfront can be a bit like the offensive or defensive linesmen making their move. The classic comparison could be Nathan Cleary and how he could one day be like Tom Brady. At the moment he’s a bit like Patrick Mahomes, his story is not over and has a lot more to go.”

McGuire went back to pre-season training just three weeks after claiming the historic title.

“It’s been unbelievable, I had my family fly over,’’ he said.

“We played in Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which was the home of the Super Bowl about three or four years ago. We have crowds of over 100,000 regularly it’s just been a fantastic experience.

“Mum and dad flew over for about two and a half months, my brother came a couple of times, my grandparents, a couple of my best mates flew over, it’s been unbelievable.”

As for following in his father’s broadcasting footsteps, Joe said he’d had good advice.

“He spent a lot of time teaching me in the kitchen,’’ he said.
