Joe McGuire celebrated his championship title win in the most Aussie way — by doing a shoey.
The Melbourne punter and his brother, Channel 7 sports reporter Xander McGuire, said it “was the only appropriate way to celebrate a natty” by drinking out of their shoe — of course to the soundtrack of Queen’s We Are The Champions.
Joe also smoked a cigar with teammates in the Atlanta changerooms where the Ohio State Buckeyes claimed victory over Notre Dame in the college football final on Tuesday.
Going against another Melbourne punter, James Rendell, the historic game was watched by almost 80,000 fans, including LeBron James in the stands, 30 million viewers and Joe’s parents, Eddie and Carla, plus avid Ohio fan and North Melbourne great Glenn Archer.
“I’m feeling bloody good, very good,’’ Joe said in a video.
“It’s unreal.”
Eddie, the former Collingwood president, said it was a proud moment seeing Joe, 24, in the no.42 jersey reach the pinnacle with his team.
“On the day Donald Trump has become the president there’s an Aussie boy from Melbourne who’s king of the town now,’’ he said.
“I saw Pants (Darren Millane) win the championship in 1990 for the Pies and this has been sensational to see the no.42 again lifting up the silverware.”
