Australian performer Elise McCann has opened up for the first time about falling in love with her musical theatre co-star Andy Karl.
“Andy is everything I’d ever waited for, or wanted, in a partner,” McCann told the Herald Sun.
“Things are really lovely and we’re very happy.”
McCann and Karl fell in love while co-starring in Groundhog Day The Musical in Melbourne last year.
Weeks after the show wrapped, Karl announced he and wife Orfeh had parted ways.
“When we cast opposite each other, I’d never met him,” McCann said.
“I never expected to fall in love with him. He’s incredibly talented, generous, supportive and celebratory. He celebrates every one of my wins as much as his own.
“I feel very supported, and seen, and cared for, and I want to do the same for him.”
McCann is in New York for work, and to support Karl’s role in the Broadway production of Moulin Rouge The Musical.
But she will soon return to Melbourne to star in Beetlejuice The Musical.
The cast also includes Rob Johnson, Karis Oka, Tom Wren, Erin Clare and the show’s co-writer Eddie Perfect.
McCann will play Barbara, a ghost who tries to scare a new family out of her former home. The role was made famous by Geena Davis in the 1988 movie version of Beetlejuice.
McCann said she can relate to Barbara’s strength in taking control of her own destiny.
“Sometimes, it takes surprising things to … to claim agency in your life, and decide who you want to be, and what’s important.”
Beetlejuice opens at the Regent Theatre on May 7.
