Broadway and West End leading man Andy Karl has confirmed his romance with Groundhog Day co-star Elise McCann after his sudden split from his wife of 23 years.

Broadway and West End star Andy Karl has confirmed his romantic relationship with Australian actor Elise McCann.

“We’re living life and being very happy together,” Karl said on the red carpet of Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf at the Comedy Theatre on Wednesday night. “She’s a wonderful, wonderful human being and a great actor.”

Karl and McCann starred in the Melbourne production of Groundhog Day The Musical which ran at The Princess Theatre from January to late April.

He played Phil Connors, the character brought to life by Bill Murray in the Groundhog Day film, while McCann played his love interest, Rita.

Karl won an Olivier Award for the role.

Weeks after Groundhog Day wrapped in Melbourne, Karl announced he and wife Orfeh had split. They had been married for 23 years.

Meanwhile, Karl and McCann have been seen together in New York, where he is based, and Sydney.

Asked how romance with McCann bloomed during Groundhog Day, Karl said: “We had a great time doing the show together, and it was a wonderful time to be together.”

McCann did not accompany Karl at the red carpet event in Melbourne.

“I’m here for a little while, checking out Melbourne and Sydney, and having a really good time,” Karl said.

Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf stars Kat Stewart and David Whiteley playing a toxic couple.

Opening night attracted a who’s who of theatre, including Karl, Marina Prior, Stefanie Jones and Des Flanagan.

The event also marked a reunion for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stars Gareth Reeves, Lucy Goleby and Tom Wren, who starred as Harry Potter, Ginny Potter, and Draco Malfoy.

Reeves is the understudy for Whiteley’s character, George, in Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf.
