Neighbours royalty Guy Pearce says he had to reteach himself how to play his character Mike Young after returning to Ramsay St more than 30 years later.
Sharing more details about Mike’s journey through the years, Pearce said it was the ultimate trip down memory lane reprising the role he picked up in 1986 as an 18-year-old.
“Mike moved to Perth and became a teacher there and you learn through these episodes that Mike has a child, and they have moved back to Erinsborough,’’ Pearce said.
“Who is Mike now, how do I play this guy? I had to trawl through my memory bank to understand how I might actually play him.
“Funnily enough, the producers had his old motorcycle gloves, they have been in the box since 1987, so that helped.”
Pearce will also appear in scenes with Henrietta Graham who is a family friend.
“I’ve been seeing these fantastic young actors and thinking it would be great to do some scenes with them — but no, (it’s) primarily us oldies together!’’ he said.
“However Henrietta, I’ve known her family for many, many years and when I heard that she had got a role on the show, I did suggest perhaps I could do some scenes with her, so it’s worked out well.
“I haven’t been here for these past years like other cast members so I’m really aware how it is for them, suddenly finishing up — I understand how that must feel. It is weird, but even coming back is kind of weird. I knew we would work it out.”
Pearce follows Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, who reprised their roles as Charlene and Scott at the end of April, and a host of others returning to mark the end of the soap after 37 years.
The final episode airs on July 28.
