Beloved comedian and TV star Denise Scott is fighting breast cancer.
“I do console myself that at least I’ve lived a full life that I’m happy with,” Scott, 68, told the Australian Women’s Weekly.
“But I don’t want to go yet. There are things I want to do.”
Scott was diagnosed six months ago, as she worked on a reboot of the classic sitcom Mother And Son, and went into rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Doctors told Scott her cancer was “particularly aggressive”.
The stand-up star said she pushed through treatment and her TV commitments because she didn’t want to disappoint anyone.
“I was thinking ‘I don’t want to shut this production down,’ but also thinking, ‘I want to live!’”
Scott was a main character in Channel 7’s popular TV drama Winners And Losers, and also starred in The Project, All Star Family Feud, Would I Lie to You?, Have You Been Paying Attention? and Hughesy, We Have a Problem.
She and Judith Lucy also performed in the award-winning stand-up show, Disappointments, and Still Here.
Scott and Lucy were awarded an Order of Australia honours in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours List for their “significant service to the arts as a comedian and actress.”
Scott has nine months of cancer treatment to go. She paid tribute to her husband, John Lane, for his love and support.
“The prognosis has continued to be good, and there’s a lot of hope,” she said.
“I thought I’d be a terrific person in my own health crisis — upbeat, positive, taking it on the chin. But no, I’ve complained to John all the time.”
