Pop princess Delta Goodrem stole the show at the VRC Kennedy Oaks Club Lunch at Crown on Wednesday.
Goodrem kicked off the event with a live stage set that had a room full of ladies on their feet. An impromptu duet with The Challenge host Brihony Dawson, singing Olivia Newton John’s classic Hopelessly Devoted To You, was also a highlight of the traditional Oaks Day build-up.
“She didn’t plan to do it and didn’t plan to do the second verse and because everyone was vibing, she said does anyone know the lyrics — and I sure do,’’ Dawson said.
“I am hopelessly devoted to her. As a non binary person I feel like a human but I’m happy to feel like a woman today.”
The stars turned out including VRC ambassador Nicole Trunfio ahead of the supermodel’s return to Flemington on Thursday; Network 10’s Chrissie Swan, Melissa Leong, Tara Rushton, Caty Price, Rob Mills and Georgie Tunny; Myer Fashions on the Field and VRC ambassadors Tayla Damir, Tim Kano, Demi Brereton, Christian Wilkins and Diana Chan, plus Pin & Win ambassadors Olivia Rogers and Rachel Watts, as well as Jaimee and James Kennedy, Stephen Jones, Rebecca Maddern, Alex Fevola and Pia Miranda.
Star jockey Jamie Kah was accompanied by fellow jockey Ben Melham — the pair’s relationship appears to be going strong as he watched on proudly while she spoke on a panel alongside Emma Booth and Amanda Ross with co-host Gorgi Coghlan.
The owners of Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip were also on stage, while Ciaron Maher’s mother Eileen was also a guest.
“He was never going to stop until he won the Cup,’’ she said.
Kah told the crowd she still felt proud of her record last year — winning 100 races in a season in metropolitan Victoria.
“I think that’s one thing I’m probably most proud of myself for because Group 1 wins are amazing but every record you’re the first female, but this was special because no person, male or female had ever done it,’’ she said.
“Hopefully that record stays for a while.”
Paralympian Booth said she would relocate to Europe next year ahead of the Paris Paralympics.
