Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and his radio sparring partner Luke Darcy have buried the hatchet two months after a heated on-air showdown.
In September, Darcy, co-host of Triple M Hot Breakfast, blasted Mr Andrews for enforcing “barbaric lockdowns” which he believes contributed to the death of his father, David, in August.
“(Your policy) is lacking in nuance, it’s lacking in sophistication … you have to admit the policy has caused death, the policy by locking people down has tipped suicide into a level that’s untenable,” Darcy told Mr Andrews back then.
Mr Andrews stressed he had to keep numbers down to avoid hospitals being overrun.
“I lost my 78-year-old father, Premier,” Darcy said.
“And you know what happened to him? He was a very similar person to you actually, Premier. He loved his golf, he was isolated in his home.
While appearing on the Hot Breakfast show on Wednesday, co-host Eddie McGuire told Mr Andrews that Darcy wanted to “shake hands ... and kiss and make up.”
Mr Andrews replied: “There’s no need for that, we’re all good, Darce. This has been a very tough year, and it’s very personal for all of us. This is one of those years, there’s no rule book, there’s no way of knowing what you have to do.
“But you have to settle on a plan, have the courage of your convictions and just push through, and that’s what Victorians have done.”
Darcy asked Mr Andrews if he could give assurances Victoria won’t go into lockdown again in 2021.
“It’s very difficult to predict,” Mr Andrews replied.
He said if there are “inevitable cases and outbreak ... then we lock down the cases, their contacts and contacts of contacts.”
Darcy said some people will be “cautious” about the COVID-19 vaccine.
Mr Andrews replied: “We’ve got to push everyone to get vaccinated once that vaccine arrives.”
