Candice Warner has hit back at former fast bowling great Mitchell Johnson, accusing him of using her husband David’s name to stay relevant.

Johnson slammed Warner over her backing of David’s selection for the upcoming Ashes series.

He said it was “weird and cringey” how she said on Fox Sports’ The Back Page that if David doesn’t perform who do selectors bring in that’s better.

“It doesn’t surprise me because he doesn’t have a lot to do with media anymore and I feel like the only way he gets a headline is by using David’s name,’’ Warner said.

“Everyone takes his comments with a grain of salt. They don’t have a lot of merit.”

David’s selection was a subject of hot debate given the veteran’s poor record in England.

Ex-ironwoman Candice and their three daughters will head over for the second, third and potentially fourth Ashes tests.

Warner has thrown her support behind husband David ahead of the upcoming Ashes series.

“We’ll miss the first test because it’s before school holidays but it’ll be nice to get back,’’ she said.

“The last time we were over there I gave birth to (our youngest daughter) Isla and she’ll get to celebrate her fourth birthday in England. I can’t be taking too much time off with my work commitments but for every parent the juggle is real.

“David takes it one game at a time and as a family we back him and believe in him.”

Warner has just launched her new book, Running Strong, which she said had received much positive feedback. In the lead up to Mother’s Day she hopes her memoir will be viewed as an ideal gift.

“I’m so glad I’ve done this and the great thing is that when my girls are older they’ll be able to read my own story in my own words,’’ she said.
