Bert Newton will spend his 83rd birthday in hospital on Friday as he continues to recover from a leg amputation.
Newton has suffered complications since undergoing the operation in May after a toe infection four months prior put his condition in a serious category and he was told he could die if drastic action was not taken.
In fresh pictures surrounded by wife Patti and his grandchildren, the TV legend looked in good spirits with his right leg bandaged.
“Bert is still in hospital, it’s a very long hard journey,’’ Patti said.
“Lots of ups and downs, but he has a great attitude and still smiling, we are taking every day as a plus.”
Entertainment reporter Peter Ford said on The Morning Show that Newton, who has spent almost six months in hospital, would likely have to spend his birthday without family due to lockdown restrictions in Victoria.
Earlier this month Patti revealed there were some setbacks as he remains in Melbourne’s Epworth hospital.
“After a couple of complications, Bert is doing well with a little rehab and lots of laughs and love,” she posted on social media.
“Thanks to all the wonderful people looking after him.”
Patti included a photo of herself, sporting a moon boot which was keeping the TV great amused.
Patti broke her ankle in two places after taking a tumble in April.
Bert’s operation took place on May 8 and he has been supported by his loved ones, including six grandchildren, Sam, Eva, Lola, Perla, Monty and Alby.
Patti has always said Bert’s recovery would take time.
“He had a choice and his choice was to live,” Patti said.
“It is going to be a long journey, but we are all very positive and he is strong.”
