TV legend Bert Newton suffered complications after his leg amputation surgery

Patti Newton has revealed her husband, TV legend Bert, suffered “complications” after his leg amputation surgery but is now improving.

TV legend Bert Newton has suffered complications as he recovers from the amputation of part of his leg.

The 82-year-old Australian entertainment icon remains in Melbourne’s Epworth hospital following the lifesaving surgery in May.

“After a couple of complications, Bert is doing well with a little rehab and lots of laughs and love,” his wife Patti shared on social media on Saturday.

“Thanks to all the wonderful people looking after him.”

She included a photo herself, complete with her moon boot, keeping the TV great amused as he had afternoon tea.

Patti broke her ankle in two places after taking a tumble in April and has been in a moon boot for weeks.

Bert made the harrowing decision to have part of his right leg removed just below his knee, after what started as an infected toe four months earlier escalated and became life threatening.

The operation took place on May 8 and he has been surrounded by his family during his recovery. His six grandchildren, Sam, Eva, Lola, Perla, Monty and Alby, has been a constant source of support and joy.

Patti has never shied away from the fact that Bert’s recovery would take time.

“He had a choice and his choice was to live,” Patti said following the operation.

“It is going to be a long journey, but we are all very positive and he is strong.”

The family is enormously grateful for well wishes Bert has received from the community.
