Bert Newton blessed with ‘so much love’ after surgery

Serious health issues forced him to have his leg amputated but much-loved TV personality Bert Newton is still smiling surrounded by family.

Patti Newton has shared a new sweet picture of smiling husband Bert with his granddaughter as they adjust to their new normal.

The TV legend had his leg amputated earlier this month after undergoing life-saving surgery.

“I wanted to show you Bert’s doing ok, still flirting with the nurses and having a laugh,” Patti wrote on Instagram.

“Spending time with his darling Lola. And taking a day at a time. A long journey but he’s blessed with so much love.”

Patti ended the post with a loveheart.

The much loved personality, 82, had to amputate his leg after suffering “serious health problems” starting before Christmas which stemmed from an infected toe.

Outside the hospital after surgery Patti said the family would adjust to a “new normal” and Bert had made a “choice to live”.

She also added that Bert’s words were “Let’s do this with a positive attitude.”

Patti first shared a picture of Bert on May 12, smiling in a hospital bed with his grandson Alby sitting alongside him.

“Thank you, everyone, for your prayers and beautiful words.” Patti wrote.

She also went on to joke: “Think Alby has stolen Bert’s hair piece x.”

The posts have been flooded with well wishes and messages of support from the public and celebrities.

Bert said had been overwhelmed by the show of care.

“This is my first week and I seem to be getting through it,” he said.

“The amount of care and love I’ve received from everyone has been overwhelming.

“All I want to say is thank you to everyone.”

Patti has been by her husband’s side the whole time and said he was determined to spend more time with his wife, children and grandchildren Sam, Eva, Lola, Monty, Perla and Alby.

“He has so much to live for and he will do his utmost to make this work,” Patti said.
