Game of Thrones picks up 24 nominations at Emmy nominations
THE nominees for TV’s highest honour were announced overnight and only one Aussie was among the list of actors in contention. Sorry, Nicole Kidman.

Don't miss out on the headlines from Emmy Awards. Followed categories will be added to My News.
AUSTRALIANS have had mixed success at this year’s Emmy nomination ceremony, with Ben Mendelsohn scoring a nod and Frances O’Connor and Nicole Kidman missing out.
There were plenty of surprise nominations and snubs across the categories for TV’s biggest awards show.
Game of Thrones ruled the ceremony with 24 nominations, including one for outstanding drama series, while American Horror: Freak Show had 19 and Olive Kitteridge 13.
TV drama Mad Men, after its final season, was showered with 11 nominations including challenging Game of Thrones for drama series, and Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks picking up acting nods.
Mendelsohn is nominated in the supporting actor in a drama series for his role in Netflix’s Bloodline.
Streaming TV service Netflix, with 34 nominations, continues to challenge the traditional commercial TV networks and pay TV channels.
Mendelsohn will compete with Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Jim Carter (Downton Abbey), Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) and Michael Kelly (House of Cards).
Bloodline is set in the Florida Keys and Mendelsohn plays Danny Rayburn, the black sheep of a family who gets caught up in the criminal world.
The 46-year-old actor from Melbourne, who had his big break in the 1987 film The Year My Voice Broke, has become a favourite supporting cast member in Hollywood in recent years with roles in The Dark Knight Rises and is currently filming Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One.
O’Connor was considered a strong chance in the supporting actress in a movie or limited series category for the BBC production The Missing, but the nominations were dominated by American Horror Story trio Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett and Sarah Paulson.
Kidman’s Grace of Monaco was planned as a theatrical release in the US, but when producer Harvey Weinstein halted that amidst controversy the movie was held back and debuted on US cable TV channel Lifetime, giving it a shot at Emmy nominations.
Despite being a critical disaster, Kidman’s star power was expected to get her an Emmy nomination but she missed out.
Grace of Monaco did get a TV movie nomination.
Among the major snubs in key categories were the year’s biggest hit, Empire (no nominations for drama series or lead actor Terrence Howard), Walking Dead (drama series or acting nods), The Good Wife (Julianna Margulies), The Americans (Keri Russell) and Masters of Sex (Lizzy Caplan and Michael Sheen).
The TV academy took a step toward recognising the increasingly diverse talent on TV, giving best actress nods to black stars Taraji P. Henson for Empire and Viola Davis for How to Get Away with Murder.
That’s sets up a possibility of a history-making win: An African American actress has never won the top drama acting award.
The Emmy ceremony will air September 20 on Fox with Andy Samberg as host.
