Japanese feudal drama Shogun has made Emmys history as the first ever non-English language series to win for best drama.

The epic drama also took home the Best Actor and Best Actress in a drama series, respectively, for Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada.

It came as the dark stalker series Baby Reindeer triumphed, winning four awards at TV’s biggest night, including acting awards for Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning.

In an action-packed night, comedian John Oliver dropped the f-bomb during his chaotic acceptance speech.

Oliver was in the middle of a quirky speech about his dead dog when organisers abruptly cut off his monologue after his win for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series.

As the “get-off-stage” instrumental music played out loud, Oliver said, “Perfect choice of music. We had to say goodbye to her.”

He then yelled out, “F--k you! I feel like Sarah McLachlan right now!”.

The reference was to McLachlan lending her music to anti-animal cruelty videos in support of the ASPCA, America’s equivalent of the RSPCA.

Meanwhile, Aussie actress Elizabeth Debicki was celebrating her Emmy win for her role in The Crown.

Debicki risked going off script by not preparing an acceptance speech but she overcame her self-confessed “pickle” of a situation, as she claimed the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category for her role as the late Princess Diana.

“I didn’t write anything down because I am very superstitious and now I am in a real pickle so now I am going to do this quickly,” she said.

“Playing this part based on this unparalleled incredible human being has been my great privilege, it has been a gift, thank you so very much.”

Australian star Naomi Watts was also celebrating after husband Billy Crudup’s win for best supporting actor in The Morning Show.

“I’m happy to be here with my piece of eye candy there, my wife,” Crudup said of Watts.

Watt was also up for an Emmy for her role in Feud: Capote v The Swans, but lost out to movie legend Jodie Foster, who won the award for lead actress in a limited or anthology series for her work in True Detective.
