EMMYS 2015: Winners, nominees, opening jokes and more

AMY Poehler has again missed out on the chance to win her first Emmy. But her perfect reaction saw her win everything else.

Andy Samberg threatens Emmy winners with mean nun

IT’S television’s biggest night. And we’re bringing you rolling coverage of the winners, losers and jokes from the 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

After an epic recorded opening that poked fun at the endless list of TV shows we’re supposed to have seen, host Andy Samberg hit the stage for his surprisingly lacklustre opening monologue.

And it wasn’t long before a Bill Cosby joke was made.

Reflecting on the big names that have hosted the awards before him, Samberg quipped: “ ... Robert Blake and Bill Cosby ... oh god I gotta get outta here!”

Demonstrating the new way they plan to get winners to wrap their speeches, Jane Lynch came on stage as the “mean nun” from Game of Thrones — ringing a bell and chanting “shame, shame!”.

“Shame!”
“Shame!”

A Donald Trump joke was thrown in for good measure and True Detective got a snide mention when Samberg brought up the shows that have ended their run.

“And we also said goodbye to True Detective ... even though it’s still on the air,” he said about the cable series.

The reviews of Samberg’s turn at the hosting gig were mixed.

One viewer tweeted it was like “watching an awkward teenager tell jokes at his bar mitzvah”. Another wrote they’d laughed harder during “one minute of Donald Trump on CNN”.

Perhaps it was just us, or maybe the jokes were just skewed to suit the main American audience. But some people did think the Brooklyn 99 star nailed it.

The best moment came when Amy Poehler and Amy Schumer took to the stage to present the first award of the night.

“We are Amy,” Poehler joked, after the pair were touched-up by their “entourage” en route to the stage. “To get this show started we’re here to present the first award of the night.”

“Which is good because I’ve got a blackout scheduled for 10pm,” Schumer added.

Allison Janney picked up the first gong for Best Supporting Actress in A Comedy Series for her role in Mom.

And Poehler kept the jokes coming throughout the night when it came time for her own category to be read out. Nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy alongside Lisa Kudrow, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Amy Schumer, Edie Falco and Lily Tomlin, Poehler brought the laughs when the camera cut to her slouched in her seat wearing a hoodie and sunglasses.

But it wasn’t enough to snag her the win. Poehler missed out on the award for her work on Parks and Recreation for a sixth consecutive year.

The gong instead went to Veep’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus for a third consecutive year.

In her acceptance speech, Louis-Dreyfus quoted her character Selina Meyer from the show.

“What a great honour it must be for you to honour me tonight ... oh, no, I’m sorry, Donald Trump said that, I’m sorry,” she joked.

As the camera panned the audience during the speech, it caught Poehler, still in character, pretending to sleep in her seat.

“Amy, wake up!” Louis-Dreyfus yelled.

In a cheeky moment between awards, Andy Samberg piped back up with a funny bit the topped any of the jokes he made in his opening monologue.

Standing at the backend of a large Emmy statue, the Brooklyn 99 star made reference to THAT infamous Girls scene before getting up close and personal with the statue.

Just when we started craving some more Amy Schumer, the Trainwreck star picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for her show Inside Amy Schumer.

The comedian kept it pretty sweet and humble — rolling through her thank yous off the top of her head.

“ ... To the girl who gave me this smokey eye ... I love it,” she joked.

Missing out on the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama for the past seven years, Jon Hamm finally picked up the award for his role in the final season of Mad Men.

Accepting the award to thunderous applause, Hamm ditched the staircase and just climbed up onto the stage.

“There’s been a terrible mistake, clearly. Thank you for that,” he said.

“It’s impossible to be named with all of those extraordinary gentlemen. It’s impossible to have done this show with this incredible cast, these incredible people, our incredible writers, our incredible crew. And it’s incredible and impossible for me, personally, to be standing up here.”

Viola Davis gave an emotional speech when she became the first African American to win the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama.

“In my mind, I see a line. And over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. But I can’t seem to get there nohow. I can’t seem to get over that line,” she said, quoting Harriet Tubman.

“And let me tell you something, the only thing that separates women of colour from anyone else is opportunity,” the How To Get Away With Murder star continued. “You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there. So here’s to all the writers, the awesome people … who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black.”

Wrapping up the night, Tracy Morgan made a surprise appearance on the Emmy stage. It’s one of his first major appearances since a bus crash left him in a coma last year.

“I suffered a traumatic brain injury that put me in a coma for eight days. When I finally regained consciousness, I was just ecstatic to learn that I wasn’t the one that messed up,” he joked.

“I’ve only recently started to feel like myself again, which means a whole lot of young women are going to get pregnant at the after party.”

Morgan then presented the Emmy for Outstanding Drama. The gong went to Game Of Thrones.
