Emmy Awards 2017: Red carpet style, ceremony and winners

SHE won Australia’s only Emmy Award but viewers were left confused by Nicole Kidman’s emotional acceptance speech after she left one thing out.

NICOLE Kidman teared up onstage at the Emmys, accepting an award for her role as an abused wife on Big Little Lies ... but viewers were confused when she left one thing out.

“We shone a light on domestic abuse. It is filled with shame and secrecy,” Kidman said, also paying tribute to Reese Witherspoon, her Big Little Lies co-star and fellow Emmy nominee.

Kidman’s publicist Wendy Day told News Corp Australia: “It was an important win for her. She didn’t think she’d win. After Lion earlier this year, then this, I think the message is: don’t be afraid of turning 50.”

Day described it as a very personal win for Kidman, after the actress went to have coffee with author Lianne Moriarty and asked her to let her take the rights on in order to get the TV series made.

In Kidman’s speech, she said: “I’m a mother and wife, I have two little girls, and my darling Keith.

“This is yours. I want my little girls to have it on their shelf and look at it and go, ‘for every

time mum didn’t put me to bed, at least I got something.’”

She referred to her “two little girls”, daughters Sunny and Faith with husband Keith Urban, but viewers were confused when she neglected to mention her adopted kids, Connor and Isabella, from her former marriage to Tom Cruise.

Shortly after Kidman’s solo acceptance speech, she was onstage again collecting the show’s award for outstanding limited series.

Kidman, who was dressed in Calvin Klein, urged Hollywood to create better roles for women — “More great roles for women, please,” Kidman said.

Meantime, Kidman’s win sent a buzz through the room at the AACTA Emmy’s screening party today in Sydney.

Love Child star Sophie Hensser said Kidman was “so full of grace and so strong and it was an incredible performance — she kicks butt in everything she does”.

Actor Cameron Daddo, who hosted the party, described Kidman’s victory as “a great win for Australia”.

“I’ve got mates in there acting ... to see Big Little Lies win best series is a great win for Australia.

“Because it’s a northern beaches tale that translates perfectly to Monterey (in California).”

POLITICAL STATEMENTS

Earlier, Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus gave President Trump a major hint while accepting her gong for best actress in a comedy series.

Speaking about the upcoming season of her American political comedy, Louis-Dreyfus said: “We did have a whole storyline about an impeachment but we abandoned that because we were worried someone might get to it first”.

Meantime, Alec Baldwin brought down the house accepting an Emmy for his impersonation of Trump.

“At long last Mr President, here is your Emmy,” Baldwin said, accepting his Emmy for his work on Saturday Night Live.

Baldwin, who won the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category, said playing Trump had impacted his personal life.

“You put that orange wig on, it’s birth control, trust me,” he said.

Earlier, Emmys host Stephen Colbert won over the audience with a little help from former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who appeared onstage.

Colbert devoted a significant portion of his opening comments to teasing Trump for having never won an Emmy, something Trump has often griped about.

“If he had’ve won an Emmy, I bet he wouldn’t have run for president,” Colbert said.

“This is all your fault. I thought you loved morally compromised anti heroes … he’s like Breaking Bad’s Walter White. He’s Walter Whiter.”

Colbert also recruited Louis-Dreyfus, in character as President Selina Meyer. During a star-studded musical number, Everything Looks Better on TV, Dreyfus sang, “Imagine if your president was not beloved by Nazis.”

In a prerecorded sketch, Colbert danced through the set of hit shows Veep, Stranger Things and The Americans, before arriving on stage — miming hilariously out of time — with a gaggle of high-kicking handmaids (from The Handmaid’s Tale).

MEMORABLE EMMYS SPEECHES

Elisabeth Moss won her first Emmy after nine nominations, a popular choice for best actress in a drama series for The Handmaid’s Tale.

A breathless Moss thanked her mother.

“You are brave and strong and smart, and you have taught me that you can be kind, and a f***ing badass.”

Master of None’s Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe won a gong for best writing in a comedy series. Waithe became the first African-American woman to win in the category, with a shoutout “to my LGBTQI family”.

Atlanta’s Donald Glover, accepting his award for Best Actor in a Comedy, said: “I want to thank Trump for making black people No. 1 on the most oppressed list. He’s the reason I’m up here.”

Producer Lorne Michaels nailed the short speech requirement, accepting a statue for Best Comedy Series for Saturday Night Live.

“I remember in 1976 … thinking, this is it. This is the high point. Turns out I was wrong,” he said.

9 to 5 ladies sledge Trump in their Emmys reunion

Ann Dowd appeared genuinely shocked and teary accepting a gong for her work on The Handmaid’s Tale, named best supporting actress in a drama series.

“I’ve been acting for a long time. That this should happen now, I don’t have the words,” Dowd said.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver picked up the Best Variety Talk Series, with the star thanking Oprah’s seat filler and asking the band to play him off.
