New gel blaster laws

A TEENAGER held up a stranger with a gel blaster and told his wife over the phone: “I’ve shot your husband. He has fainted but not dead ... Give us $10,000.”

Trent Jay Kelly pleaded guilty in the Southport District Court on Thursday to armed robbery, extortion, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing property connected to an offence.

Crown prosecutor Christopher Cook told the court the 33-year-old victim was on the phone to his wife while walking to the Woolworths at Ormeau to get milk about 7.30pm on February 6 last year.

The victim heard Kelly, 19, call out and ask what street he was on. He stopped to help Kelly out.

Kelly pulled out a gel blaster which looked like a Glock pistol and held it to the victim’s head.

The victim said he had only $10 but gave over a gold chain and dropped his phone before running away.

Mr Cook said the victim told police: “I was running for my life and was certain he was going to kill me.”

The court was told that Kelly picked up the phone and made the demands for money to the victim’s wife.

She called police who were able to track down Kelly at an address he had given to her.

At Kelly’s home, police found 5g of cannabis and a grinder.

Judge Catherine Muir sentenced him to three years’ prison with immediate release on parole.

He has been in custody since the attack.

“I see you have a large group of friends,” she told Kelly. “If they are the friends you enjoyed alcohol and drug taking with then you need to find new friends.”

Defence barrister Marty Longhurst said there was no doubt the victim feared for his life looking at the gun.

“It looks all the world like a real handgun,” he said.

Mr Longhurst said Kelly smoked cannabis and became addicted to prescription drugs such as Xanax and opioids.

He told the court Kelly found custody boring and cried to himself in the cells.
