A MAN accused of shoplifting a $650 driver from Helensvale Golf Course at the weekend has quite literally paid for his sins, mailing in a sum of cash to club officials after footage of his alleged theft went viral.
While his identity remains a mystery, club officials took to social media on Wednesday to reveal the elderly man’s attempt at making amends.
“Opened our letterbox today to find our stolen driver has been paid for, although the thief has not come forward, he has posted the payment to us,” club spokesperson Danielle Lawton said.

Vision of the man’s alleged theft captured plenty of interest, his broad-brimmed hat doing little to conceal his face from surveillance cameras.
Despite his efforts to level the playing field it appears not all is forgiven, with the club still hoping to speak with the man.
“If you have any information on who it is please still contact the club. May the golf gods curse him and every drive he hits is duffed,” Ms Lawton said.
‘Purely to steal’: Video of man’s brazen theft

CLUB officials at Helensvale Golf Course have been left swinging mad following the alleged theft of a $650 driver from its shop for the second time in a matter of weeks.
CCTV footage of the man believed to be responsible - who allegedly brought a club to pretend he was playing - was released on Sunday, with officials claiming the man visited the club “purely to steal” as he did not play a game.
“He parked his car where our cameras could not see it,” Club spokeswoman Danielle Lawton said.
Vision shows the man wearing a blue jacket, broadbrimmed hat, a grey polo shirt and tracksuit pants as well as white sneakers.
He is allegedly seen picking up a golf club before exiting the store without paying.
“(He) walked around avoiding cameras, wore a large-brimmed hat to hide from cameras, brought a club with him to pretend he was playing golf and to help hide the stolen club.”
She said the man surveyed the area for about 20 minutes before making off with the driver.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the club on (07) 5573 1278.
