A fundraiser has been launched to support the family of a Gold Coast one-punch attack victim who “lived and breathed for his kids”.
Michael Hayes, 39, died in a Gold Coast hospital on Thursday after a five-day fight for life following an alleged serious assault at Sanctuary Cove on Saturday.
Alex Rasic, son of former Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang national sergeant-at-arms Simon “The King” Rasic, has been charged with unlawful striking causing death.
A GoFundMe page created by a friend for the family of the Sanctuary Cove father had already raised hundreds of dollars just hours after it was launched.
The fundraiser said Mr Hayes left behind two children - Levi, 10 and Nevaeh, 2.
“Michael was a loving, generous, caring man who always put others needs above his own,” it read.
“He was a self-employed mechanic who lived and breathed for his kids.
“At this tragic time we are asking for your help in supporting these beautiful kids and their family.”
Just before Mr Hayes’ life support was switched off, his sister Lynda Blanch posted a heartbreaking tribute to Facebook.
“#forever39,” she wrote.
“Pinch ‘n’ punch for the 1st day of the month.
“Rest easy now. We love you.
“Forever in our hearts.”
Ms Blanch posted three photos of her holding Mr Hayes’ hand while he laid in hospital.
Tributes flowed from friends and family on her post as all were sorry to hear the news.
“So sorry to hear this Lynda,” Liesl Ware commented.
“Deepest condolences to you and your family. May your brother rest peacefully.”
Old friend Becky Flint said she was “devastated” by the news.
“I’m in tears reading this,” she said.
“I will be thinking back today on all our good time together.
“I still have all the little pressies that Michael gave me back in the good old pony club days.”
Another wrote: “No words will help at this time. I feel this so much for you all.”
Police are appealing for anyone who was at Sanctuary Cove Boat show, which was held over the weekend, and went to Destinos bar between 9pm and 9.30pm and saw anyone suspicious, the incident, or has related footage to come forward.
