Rebecca Micallef pleads guilty to attempted bestiality, filming sexual acts with dogs

The woman recorded more than 30 videos in just a few weeks – and has now learned her fate in court after pleading guilty to several charges including attempted bestiality.

A Gold Coast mum held back tears as she found out she would be spared time behind bars after filming herself engaging in sexual acts with her pet beagles.

Southport District Court was told Rebecca Louise Micallef recorded 28 videos – most only seconds in length – involving one or both of her dogs across a three-week period in January.

The 35-year-old also filmed an unsuccessful attempt to have sex with her male dog on January 20.

Crown prosecutor Stephanie Gallagher said the recordings were sent to Micallef’s then-partner.

Ms Gallagher said Micallef was candid with police after the videos were found on her phone, and that there was no evidence of specific harm to either of her dogs.

The court was told the man the then-Pimpama woman was dating at the time had repeatedly messaged her in the weeks prior about his desire for her to engage in sexual activity with her dogs, saying he wanted videos of it and urging her to “practise”. Micallef initially refused his requests.

It was heard Micallef had struggled with mental health and an eating disorder and had suffered domestic violence in a previous relationship.

Defence barrister Emily Lewsey, instructed by Brooke Winter Solicitors, said a psychologist’s report indicated these factors left Micallef particularly vulnerable to manipulation and control.

Ms Lewsey said her client was now at risk of losing her job of 16 years, but had taken significant steps to address her mental health and rehabilitation.

Micallef cried quietly at points throughout proceedings, and was supported by several people in the courtroom gallery.

Judge Jodie Wooldridge said Micallef’s conduct was “clearly unacceptable”, though was balanced against her clean criminal history and ongoing treatment.

Micallef pleaded guilty to several charges including attempted bestiality – relating to the sex attempt – and breaching duty of care by inappropriate handling, in relation to the remaining videos.

She was sentenced to 15 months’ jail, wholly suspended for 18 months, placed on probation for 18 months. She was also banned from possessing, purchasing, or otherwise acquiring any animal for five years.
