THE police Deputy Commissioner has suggested it’s “probably not a good idea” to carry the drug ice while flouting Covid-19 rules after a Melbourne man’s arrest at Gold Coast Airport.

Queensland Police’s Steve Gollschewski raised the arrest of the 29-year-old interstate resident at the state government’s coronavirus press conference on Friday.

NEW COVID CASES TRAVELLED TO SOUTHERN GOLD COAST

According to police, the man became agitated after being told by officers that his travel pass was not valid after arriving on a flight from Melbourne on Thursday afternoon.

Police allege he then scaled a counter and had to be subdued by officers, who placed him in handcuffs.

The Melbourne man has since been charged with a string of alleged offences.

A police spokeswoman said officers “charged a man after he allegedly failed to comply with Covid directions and was found to be carrying a quantity of methylamphetamine (ice) at a Coolangatta airport yesterday (Thursday) afternoon”.

The Melbourne man has been charged with one count each of fail to comply with Covid-19 Public Health Direction (chief health officer), fail to comply with Covid-19 Direction (emergency officer), obstruct police and possessing dangerous drugs.”

He was expected to face Southport Magistrates Court on Friday, October 1.
