The man shot by cops in Coomera on Sunday was detained by police in Burleigh on the Friday and taken to Gold Coast University Hospital -- only to be released.

Joshua John Kleeman allegedly confronted police and threatened to attack them with a knife that Friday.

It is alleged police were able to calm him down.

He underwent an emergency assessment in hospital and was later released.

It came two days before Kleeman allegedly warned he was “prepared for war” and “armed and ready to go so do not come unless you’re ready to go” two hours before he was shot by police at Bellagio Crescent.

The Carrara man is believed to have posted two Facebook messages about 1.30pm on Sunday.

The first read: “Send you who want, I hate who i am but know I am fullv aware of the evil in me.

“Whoever you send be prepared for war. I’m armed and ready to go so do not come unless you’re ready to go.

“I’m ready, be aware that today I go and anyone who tries to stop me.. well you have

been warned.”

He allegedly posted another minutes later, which simply read: “Laters.”

Mr Kleeman, 29, remains in a serious condition in the Gold Coast University Hospital under police guard.

ID of ‘armed’ man shot by police who allege he ‘rushed’ them

POLICE have shot a man multiple times, claiming he was armed with a knife and had “rushed” three officers in a quiet Gold Coast suburb.

The 29-year-old - identified as Joshua John Kleeman - was shot at Bellagio Crescent at Coomera, with witnesses hearing yelling and describing “four” to “five” gunshots.

A Queensland Police spokesman said officers attended the address at 3:20pm on Sunday to conduct a welfare check following reports the man had attempted self-harm.

Police allege the man answered the door brandishing a knife and lunged toward officers and was subsequently shot.

Three Coomera Police Station officers - an experienced male sergeant and a male and female constables with three to five years on the force - attended.

More than one fired their weapons during the incident, all captured on body-worn cameras.

Residents of the normally quiet Coomera street say they heard shouting before four to five gunshots rang out on Sunday afternoon.

Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said the officers had “no other option” after trying to negotiate with the man.

“They were in fear of their lives and this is a police officer’s worst nightmare but they were left with no other option but to use their firearms,” he said.

“I’ve spoken to all three officers and physically they are safe. But it is one of those incidents nobody should have to attend and it shows the dangerous nature of police work.

“This is a real tragedy. My thoughts are with them because (the officers) will have to live with what occurred.”

Mr Leavers said the officers who shot the man gave him first aid afterwards while emergency services rushed to the scene.

Olyvia Lucas, who only moved to Bellagio Crescent a few weeks ago, said she was shocked.

“There was yelling and screaming and then 20 seconds later I heard five gunshots,” she claimed. “I saw a man in bandages being taken away by the ambulance.”

Long-time Bellagio Crescent resident David Stewart was sitting in his games room with his flatmates when he heard the gunshots ring out just metres from his front door.

“I heard four bullet shots and in 10 years of living here I have never heard anything like it,” he said.

“It’s really sad that Coomera has gone down the gurgler, this is a beautiful area but now, it’s like, what happened?”

An ambulance took the man to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

Police Regional Crime Coordinator Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith, at the scene, said the shot man was in a critical condition and undergoing surgery at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

It was too early to say how many times the man had been shot, Det. Supt. Smith said.

“He has been shot several times,” he said.

“The matter has occurred in relation to a call for assistance in relation to his potential mental health concerns and on arrival here he has confronted police with a knife and they have had to take actions to defend themselves,” he said.

Det. Supt. Smith said police had travelled to “a number” of locations throughout the day in an attempt to locate the man before arriving at the Coomera property where the shooting occurred.

“He was asked several occasions to put the knife down, he failed to comply with that and rushed at police,” Det. Supt. Smith claimed.

The Coomera street remains blocked off and is an active crime scene.

Det. Supt. Smith said his officers were doing “as well as could be expected”.

Officers with metal detectors are combing the scene looking for the bullet casings.

A police helicopter has been circling above Bellagio Crescent.

The police Ethical Standards Command is expected to launch an investigation. The investigation is subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

More to come.
