Residents in the tight-knit community of Currumbin Waters are in a state of shock after a body was pulled from Currumbin Creek on Wednesday afternoon.
A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the woman’s body was found in the water near Whitsunday Dr at about 2.50pm.
Currumbin Waters resident Jenny Foster said a neighbour in the street had first noticed the body earlier in the afternoon, and was the one who called police.
Police used the neighbour’s boat to bring the body to shore.
The neighbour had told her the woman – who was Asian in appearance – was fully dressed with shoes on and appeared to have been in the water for a while.
She was told the woman was wearing a “child-sized” life vest that didn’t fit her properly and it was tied up at the front with rope.
“It didn’t look like a normal life vest.”
Other residents in the street praised police officers for their efforts.
A number of police vehicles, including a police boat, were parked in the street on Wednesday afternoon. Forensics officers were among police seen arriving at the scene.
