Four teens have been arrested – two found by a dog squad hiding in a tree – after they allegedly smashed a stolen vehicle into a police van with an officer inside at an M1 roadworks site.

Gold Coast District Police Superintendent Rhys Wildman said it was “lucky no one was killed” in the crash, which occurred near Exit 49 on the Pacific Motorway southbound shortly before 2am on Wednesday morning.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) senior operations supervisor Adam Flory said when paramedics arrived they found a car which had crashed into the roadworks.

The Queensland Police van was stationed at the roadworks site.

Police took four juveniles into custody, alleging the group occupied the car when it crashed into a stationary manned police van overseeing the roadworks.

A police officer aged in his 30s was complaining of neck and arm pain and the police van sustained significant back-end damage in the crash.

Supt Wildman said the officer showed “incredible professionalism and tenacity”.

“Apart from the fact that he was struck from behind at speed and suffered soft tissue injuries to his shoulder, arm and elbow – managed to arrest one of the juveniles at the scene.

“There was obviously a number of workers and machinery at the roadworks site, and it is extremely lucky that no one was injured or killed.”

He said it was not yet understood if the collision with the police van was intentional or due to travelling at high speeds.

Supt Wildman made comment on alleged teen criminals posting their exploits to social media, and said while it formed part of their criminal “branding”, police used social media tracking as an “investigative tool”.

A 15-year-old, alleged to be the driver of the stolen 2018 BMW M2 sedan, suffered minor injuries in the crash and was arrested at the scene.

Three more teens allegedly attempted to flee on foot and were found by Queensland Police Dog Squad canine Raptor and his handler at an Orange Mountain Rd, Ormeau sports club.

Two of the youths were found by the police hiding in a tree.

A 15-year-old boy from Grange has been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and possessing dangerous drugs and was given a notice to appear in court.

A 15-year-old boy from Tarragindi has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and also given a notice to appear.

A 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy have been receiving medical treatment for minor injuries and as of Wednesday morning, were sent back into police custody. Police officers were continuing their inquiries.

Paramedics treated a teen with neck and chest pain, a teen with neck pain and abrasions and a teen with neck pain, while another teen declined to be assessed.

The teens and the police officer were all taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Mr Flory warned of delays on the motorway on Wednesday morning.

“Being on the M1 and in the roadworks area, there is reduced flow of traffic so there is cars which queue in the traffic and people who walk around the site,” he said.

“There is a lot of potential there for a lot of other injuries especially it being a roadworks site.”

Motorists can expect ongoing delays southbound das police investigate the crash.

Emergency services have urged motorists to consider alternative routes.

Police believe a second car, a white Kia sedan was involved after it was seen driving around Peachy and Orange Mountain Rd shortly after the crash.

Officers have urged anyone who saw the accident, or who has dashcam footage of the blue BMW or white Kia sedan at Pimpama and surrounding suburbs, to contact police.
