Nathan James Lawrence caught with homemade .22 single shot gun in Southport

A tradie pushed a police officer over before running away with a homemade rim-fire single shot gun in the CBD. Find out what happened in court.

A tradie who pushed a police officer over before running away with a homemade rim-fire single shotgun in the CBD also tried to destroy the bottle of the drug fantasy he had on him.

Nathan James Lawrence was only stopped from running when police tasered him a court has been told.

The 26-year-old will now remain in custody until at least September.

Lawrence pleaded guilty in the Southport District Court on Wednesday to multiple offences including possessing a weapon, damaging evidence and possessing a dangerous drug.

Judge Jodie Wooldridge sentenced him to a head sentence of two-and-a-half years prison with parole release on September 21.

He has been in custody since April last year.

Crown prosecutor Kathleen Payne told the court police had stopped a car in Southport on April 14 last year and Lawrence was one of three passengers.

The court was told Lawrence told an officer he had dropped something and when the officer looked down Lawrence pushed him in the shoulder.

Lawrence then fled from police and threw an item away before he tripped.

The court was told Lawrence got up and kept running. When he did not stop police tasered him.

Ms Payne said Lawrence had also thrown a bottle of the drug fantasy on the ground and stomped on the lid in an attempt to break the bottle.

She told the court the item he had thrown was a homemade .22 calibre single shotgun.

A bullet was in the chamber and three more cartridges in his bag, she told the court.

Defence barrister Grace Devereaux said Lawrence was on the waiting list to attend an opioid rehabilitation program while in custody.

She said when released Lawrence hoped to use his previous experience as a labourer, concreter and tiler to help get work.
