Police stop alleged hoons on the Gold Coast

A notorious hoon gang who allegedly threw rocks at police and caused havoc on Gold Coast streets are “irrelevant” and “don’t deserve to be on our roads” according to one of the city’s top cop.

The Mexican Hoon Cartel have hit back saying their planned “bally march” against the state government’s hoon laws was “going to be peaceful”.

Police were called to the Robina Bunnings on Saturday night after reports of hoons gathering in the area.

It is alleged more than 100 people – most wearing balaclavas – had gathered at the carpark to do burnouts, skids and other dangerous car stunts.

Police will allege the event had been advertised on social media by members of the notorious Mexican Hoon Cartel – an online group which co-ordinates hooning meets across the Gold Coast.

The Mexican Hoon Cartel also posts videos of their gatherings online.

Gold Coast police Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon said 17 people were arrested at Robina – including a 20-year-old Boondall man who allegedly threw a rock at a police car.

Eight fines were also issued.

The rock shattered the police car’s window and left one officer with glass in their eye.

On Sunday, anonymous members of the Mexican Hoon Cartel took to their social media accounts to address the event.

“We asked everyone to be peaceful and respectful at the meet up. Unfortunately there will always be trouble makers that take things too far,” the post stated.

“We do understand people’s anger though, a lot of people have been put through hell by the police and government.

“The people are at breaking point. We need to stand strong and not let the government get the better of us.”

In social media posts the group have said what they want is for the government to provide a facility where they can do burnouts, skids and other car stunts.

Chief Supt Hanlon was sceptical about the intention of the rally to be peaceful.

“They were always telling people it would be a peaceful process but that was quite obviously incorrect when one of the first police cars who turned up had a significantly large rock through the side window.”

He said it took police – which including the public safety response team, highway patrol, dog squad and general duties – about an hour to get the situation under control.

Chief Supt Hanlon said Saturday’s demonstration was to protest new hooning laws recently introduced by the state government which makes organising, attending and filming a hooning event illegal.

The crackdown is a part of online police operations targeting hoons, including the Mexican Hoon Cartel.

“I would argue that the Mexican Hoon Cartel are a bunch of irrelevant individuals that don’t deserve the right to be on our roads,” Chief Supt Hanlon said.

“If they are not showing remorse and want to continue to act like this, then it’s our community to remove them from the roads.”

In March this year police launched Operation Victor Carve, a high visibility campaign which targets many offences including hooning.

Chief Supt Hanlon said since March police had issued 267 traffic fines, 63 people were charged on 85 traffic offences and three vehicles were impounded and tow immobilised as part of the operation.

Police have also performed 422 roadside breach tests.
