A man who allegedly threatened staff with a large knife during a frightening armed robbery at a northern Gold Coast pub has been refused bail.

Raden Achman appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Friday facing one charge each of armed robbery, obstructing police, and possessing prohibited medicine.

Police allege the 31-year-old went to the Helensvale Tavern on Sir John Overall Drive about 5.15pm on Thursday, where he brandished a knife at staff while demanding money.

Achman allegedly forced entry into the cash register before fleeing on foot towards Brisbane Rd.

He was found at Southport at 11.30pm and was held in custody until his court appearance.

Prosecutor Sammi Dutschke opposed Achman’s bail application, saying the Biggera Waters man had previously faced court after being busted with a spring-loaded metal knife.

Ms Dutschke said police were also investigating his possible connection to alleged offences in April, but no other charges had yet been laid.

Duty lawyer Steph Smith said Achman was homeless and unemployed prior to his arrest, but would have a stable home with his mother and grandmother if released on bail.

She said Achman had not taken his schizophrenia medication for about seven days leading up to the alleged armed robbery.

Ms Smith proposed Achman be required to see a GP about his mental health within a week as a condition of her client’s bail, along with a ban from the Helensvale Tavern and a curfew.

Achman’s bail was refused. He will be remanded in custody until his matter is next mentioned on June 13.
