A man who caused chaos at a Gold Coast surfing contest allegedly stealing a board and lead police on a near two-hour chase after running into the water has been fined nearly $1000.
The bizarre incident unfolded near the Burleigh Heads surf club on Friday where preparations were underway for the Australia Boardriders Battle at the weekend.
A Queensland Police Service (QPS) spokesman said a 49-year-old man stole a black and blue surfboard at about 11:55am with officers giving chase.
About 10 minutes later the man paddled out to sea to escape authorities – and didn’t comply with the directions of police to return to shore.
Lifeguards continued to monitor the man in the water until additional officers arrived on scene. At about, 1.50pm, almost two hours after the chase began, water police managed to take the man into custody.
The QPS spokesman said the man has since been issued with two infringement notices for public nuisance and obstruct police costing $966.
The Boardriders Battle attracted the cream of Aussie surfing with legends of the world pro tour of yesteryear including world champion Joel Parkinson and tour stars Bede Durbidge, Nathan Hedge, Taj Burrow and Owen Wright.
