A “normally quiet” street in the city’s north was left strewn with empty vodka bottles, discarded shorts and plastic cups after an out-of-control weekend party that ended in a 20-person brawl.
Four people were charged after the Osmium Lane, Hope Island bash that took 20 police officers an hour to break up on Saturday.
“It was massive, I just heard noise and clapping and you could hear the f-word and n-word and all that,” neighbour Rina said.
“Then all of a sudden ten cop cars rocked up with police dogs as well and I just thought – oh my god this is normally a quiet street.”
Rina said she watched from her house as drunken teens trespassed on her property, sat on her car and left a trail of vodka bottles as they walked down the road.
“My sister lives down at the end of the street and she said she could see men pissing on the road in front of her house but she didn’t want to go outside and say anything in case,” Rina said.
“After a while my husband basically went and told the cops to do their jobs because it was taking too long and people were trespassing on our property.”
At least 30 people are estimated to have attended the party, allegedly including underage teens.
“I could hear them talking because they were outside my house, on my property, and some of them said that the cops were checking IDs because they were underage,” she said.
“And some of them were really drunk because they kept slipping and falling over on my driveway because it was raining that night.”
Police charged three people with contravening a direction of police, while a 20-year-old man was charged with possessing dangerous drugs.
Rina, who has only been living at her Hope Island residence for a year after moving from Melbourne, said when she moved she believed she had been moving into a “nice part” of the city.
“I’m from Melbourne, and there’s a lot of scandal that happens there, but I’ve never seen anything like that before,” she added.
It is understood that the house is an Airbnb rental and that the owner is currently overseas. Stacks of garbage bags on the property’s front lawn on Monday were all that remained of the weekend chaos.
EARLIER: AN HOUR TO BRING CHAOTIC SCENE UNDER CONTROL
It took multiple teams of police an hour to break up a 20-person brawl at an out-of-control party in the city’s north at the weekend.
Four people were charged at the Hope Island bash which needed 20 police to break up after it became unruly on Saturday night.
Gold Coast Police Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon told the Bulletin police were initially called to Osmium Lane about 7pm after noise complaints.
He said a man was charged at that time with contravening a direction of police.
Chief Supt Hanlon said police were called again about two hours later.
“This time we could tell there were people fighting, smashing glasses and they were damaging the house,” he said.
It is understood about 20 people were involved in the brawl – 10, two-man police crews responded.
It was then police declared the party out-of-control, which allows police to stop the party.
“It took us about an hour to get it under control, move people on, get people in Ubers and taxis and get them away from the location,” Chief Supt Hanlon said.
Police charged a 17-year-old boy and a 21-year-old man with contravening a direction of police while at the party. A 20-year-old man was charged with possessing dangerous drugs.
Chief Supt Hanlon said police were also investigating the organiser of the party and whether they should be charged.
“The party was in a rented premises so the owner is not the person involved,” he said.
It is not clear if it was a long-term or weekend rental.
“These people were fighting among themselves,” he said.
“Luckily when police turned up none of my police got injured but there was significant damage to the property.”
Chief Supt Hanlon described the fight as “disappointing” especially given police had been there two hours later.
“We are not the fun police but people need to be respectful of others when they have parties,” he said.
“We are happy for people to enjoy themselves.
“What we are saying is just be mindful of others and be respectful of others.”
