Gold Coast university student Avdo Bise guilty of grievous bodily harm after Brisbane nightclub attack

A Gold Coast university student brutally attacked a man in a nightclub after he was asked to leave two women alone.

Does alcohol make us violent?

A Gold Coast university student coward punched a man in a Brisbane nightclub after he was asked to leave two of the man’s female friends alone.

Avdo Bise did not stop at one punch and struck the man a further five or six times until bystanders were able to stop him.

The 21-year-old claimed he attacked the man because he thought he was going to be shanked.

His victim went to hospital with a fractured orbital socket, bleeding and bruises. He needed screws and plates to fix the fracture.

Bise pleaded guilty in the Southport District Court on Tuesday to grievous bodily harm.

Judge Rowan Jackson sentenced him to three years’ prison with immediate parole. Bise has spent no time in custody.

“You should make no mistake that if you set one foot wrong while you are on the order I am making today you will go to prison,” Judge Jackson said.

“It would be a very significant mistake to think you have got away with this.

“You should continue with every step you can to make sure nothing of this kind ever happens again.”

Crown prosecutor Jessica Guy told the court the man and two friends went to the MET in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane about 10pm on June 25 last year.

After meeting the woman, Bise followed them to the entrance of the bathroom.

Ms Guy said that was when the victim approached Bise and told him the women were not interested and to leave them alone.

She said the victim felt a sharp strike to his face. When he put his hands to his eye he felt another few strikes to his head.

He reported the matter to police about 11.30pm.

Ms Guy said Bise approached police in the Valley that night and told them he had punched someone in the MET.

“He said he thought he was going to be shanked but saw nothing in (the victim’s) hands,” she said.

Defence lawyer Bill Potts, of Potts Lawyers, said Bise did not realise the women were not interested.

“A young man felt these women had an interest in him,” he said.

“He spent money and he spent a considerable amount of time with them.”

Mr Potts said that after the attack Bise was “so disgusted with his own behaviour that he has ceased the use of alcohol.”

He said Bise was in his third year of his university degree and had previously been a part of the Army Reserves.
