Gold Coast taxi driver Singh Cheema accused of pulling knife on passengers at Surfers Paradise

A taxi driver who allegedly threatened passengers with a knife and ran a man down in a Gold Coast party precinct has been identified.

A taxi driver who allegedly threatened passengers with a knife in Surfers Paradise and tried to run them down has faced court.

Surfers Paradise man Amandeep Singh Cheema had his matter adjourned to August 25 and his bail enlarged in the Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.

The 35-year-old is charged with one count each of going armed to cause fear and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He has not entered a plea to the charges.

Police were called to the intersection of Hanlan St and Surfers Paradise Blvd at 1.30am on August 1.

It is alleged the driver had an argument with four male passengers about a fare charge.

He is accused of pulling weapons on the group, which fled on foot.

Police will also allege the driver followed the group in his taxi and intentionally drove into one of the men at the intersection of Cavill Ave and Surfers Paradise Boulevard, causing the person to be thrown onto the bonnet of the vehicle before falling to the ground.

Police allege Cheema reversed the taxi, revved the engine and drove at speed towards another member of the group, narrowly missing him.

All members of the group sustained minor injuries, it is alleged.
