It comes as a new image has emerged, demonstrating the impact of the Mercedes crash which left Mr McWilliams in a critical condition in a coma inside Gold Coast University Hospital.

Mr McWilliams was behind the wheel of the convertible when it overturned at the intersection of Southport Nerang Rd and Binstead Way shortly after 1am on Sunday morning.

He was left trapped in the twisted wreckage of the luxury vehicle, but was eventually freed and taken to the hospital in a critical condition, alongside the Queensland Ambulance Service High Acuity Response Unit.

Mr McWilliams suffered serious arm and leg injuries in the crash, a police spokesperson said.

The accident was close to both Southport’s fire and ambulance stations and it’s understood emergency services were on scene very quickly.

Mr McWilliam’s mother Suzanne McWilliams said on Facebook “he was saved by the fire station being near to the accident” and “they obviously saved his life”.

“Just so our FBFs (Facebook friends) know, Nigel is in a coma after rolling his car last night. He is stable but in a bad way,” she wrote.

“We would be grateful for your healing thoughts and if you are inclined to pray we are grateful.

“Family have been notified and tomorrow will be decision time for the many injuries he has.”

Mr McWilliam’s wife Jodie McWilliams said on Facebook she was “doing everything I can” and that her husband “will be OK, I’ll make sure of it”.

“Nigel and I really will get through this. He’s got the best care he could have and a wife who is so strong for him, Love to all xo,” she wrote.

The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit has been investigating, including looking into a possible link between the crash and a hit-and-run incident on the same road ten minutes earlier, involving a driver clipping a parked Suzuki Swift hatchback and failing to stop.
