Four men who hijacked a car at knifepoint had been kicked off a tram not long before the armed robbery.
Police are searching for the men who opened the doors of a blue Toyota Corolla and threatened a teenager and his father while they were stopped at traffic lights on Wardoo St, Southport about 8.30pm on Sunday.
The weapon wielded was a hunting knife.
The four men – believed to be aged between 15 and 20 and of Pacific Island descent – then demanded they pair get out of the car.
Gold Coast police Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said: “From what I understand they basically said ‘get out, we want your vehicle’.”
“His doors were obviously unlocked which has allowed them to gain entry to that vehicle which has given them the opportunity to threaten them with a knife.”
Once the father and son had gotten out of the car, the men fled in the Corolla.
“They were certainly shaken up,” Acting Supt Knowles said.
They were not physically injured
The father and son walked to the Southport police station to report the incident.
Acting Supt Knowles said prior to the incident the group of four men had been kicked off the light rail at the Queen St station.
“They were ejected from the G Link tram as a result of just misbehaving in general and carrying on,” he said.
Their behaviour on the light rail is not believed to have been violent.
Acting Supt Knowles said the car was later caught on traffic cameras speeding south through Robina at high speed.
He said motorists driving with their doors locked was a “valid safety solution”.
“It is certainly worth driving around with your vehicle locked, as disappointing as it is in society today,” he said.
Meanwhile, the search for the stolen Corolla led to police catching four teens in a stolen silver Nissan Navara which had been taken in an unrelated incident.
Acting Supt Knowles said that while the chopper was searching for the Corolla, the Nissan was spotted travelling erratically through Gold Coast streets.
After a minor collision with another car on Ferry Rd, police were able to catch the four teens in the car.
“The vehicle hadn’t been reported stolen at the time but inquiries by our communications centre did identify the vehicle had been taken unlawfully from a Mermaid Waters address,” Acting Supt Knowles said.
Three of the teens were juveniles from Logan and the Gold Coast while the fourth was a 19-year-old man from Mermaid Waters.
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage of a blue Toyota Corolla with the Queensland registration 726 YAD to contact them.
